Stefan

The Career tributes of Districts 1, 2, and 4 gathered around the base of the Cornucopia. Kai was annoying the living hell out of Bonnie. Hayley was arguing with Klaus. As for Stefan, he was looking up at the stars by the lakeside. He thought of the people he'd drawn blood from today, and wondered how long they'd be able to live past their injuries.

"You're looking awfully peaceful, here all by yourself," Rebekah said, sitting down next to him.

He glanced up at her. She and her brother had scored the highest for their training sessions- An 11 for each of them. Stefan was curious as to how she was feeling about the prospects of the game. He barely knew his district partner, Hayley, but Rebekah's district partner was her brother. In the end, would she sacrifice herself for him? Would he? Or would the both of them throw aside their family values and fight each other to the death?

"Why are you staring?" Rebekah frowned.

"I wasn't," Stefan said hastily.

"You're a bad liar, Salvatore."

They sat in silence for a few moments.

"Do you have any other siblings?" Stefan asked. "What's your family like?"

"Well," Rebekah replied thoughtfully, "Our parents are cursed messes. We lost our eldest sister to an illness. I've got a few more brothers back home."

Stefan thought of his own brother. The two of them had grown up together, inseparable, despite their crude upbringing. Then their mother had passed away from an illness, and conflicts had become frequent between them. They had been in the middle of a very heated fight when Stefan's name had been reaped. He wished he could go back now and take back every mean thing he had said to Damon.

'Stop acting as if you're never going to see him again,' he chided himself. 'Win the game, then go home with towers of riches trailing behind you. You're not a lost cause.'

"What are you doing?" Stefan said, backing away when Rebekah leaned towards him.

"You're stuck in a forest with only fifteen other people, ten of whom are wishing for your imminent death. You have no certainty as to whether you'll leave this place on your feet or in a body bag. Are you really going to refuse?" Rebekah murmured.

Stefan stayed still, and let her lips make contact with his. Rebekah was one of the most beautiful girls Stefan had ever seen, that was undeniably true. Yet he only felt uncomfortable when she climbed on top of him, straddling his legs with her own, for this brought back the voice in his head which kept reminding him he was going to die without having ever experienced an epic love.

"Rebekah!" Klaus's voice pierced the air.

Rebekah groaned and pulled herself off of Stefan. Not a second later, Stefan was dragged to his feet by Klaus, who then punched him upside the head.

"Nik!" Rebekah said in protest.

"What?" Klaus said innocently.

Under normal circumstances, Stefan would have punched back anyone who had punched him. But considering the situation at play, that being the worst which could happen was somebody's murder, Stefan decided to restrain himself for now.

"You narcissistic hypocrite!" Rebekah fumed. "I saw you making eyes at Labonair, you know!"

"I haven't the slightest clue as to what you mean, sister," Klaus replied.

"What are we all doing over here?" Kai beamed, popping up from behind Stefan.

Stefan glanced at the many slice wounds on Kai's side. He didn't know how Kai hadn't passed out from all the blood loss yet.

"You know, I like this," Kai gestured to himself then to all of them. "This dynamic that we have. It reminds me of one big happy family. I've never had that, you know."

"Do us all a favor and stop talking, Parker," Bonnie muttered.

"Finally, someone who isn't a complete moron speaks," Hayley said. She hooked an arm around Bonnie's shoulder. "If you ladies are done with all your dramatics, maybe we could decide who gets the first watch tonight?"

A tentative topic, seeing as none of them would ever be able to fully trust one another from here on out.

"One from each district?" Rebekah suggested. "Higher chance of not getting stabbed in the back that way."

"Speak for yourself," Bonnie grumbled. "I don't plan on trusting Parker for as long as either of us live."

"That's sweet, Bon-bon," Kai said.

"I'll take watch, if you don't mind," Hayley said to Stefan.

"Nik?" Rebekah turned to her brother.

"You take it. I'm tired."

"That isn't fair!"

"I don't care, Rebekah."

The two kept arguing as they all headed back into the Cornucopia. Eventually, Rebekah won the argument. Kai, Hayley, and Klaus were left to stay up for a few more hours while Bonnie, Stefan, and Rebekah would get a bit of rest if they could.

As he fell asleep, Stefan wondered if it would have been better if Damon could have been here. Klaus and Rebekah's constant banters had made Stefan nostalgic for his brother, and yet... Damon's presence would have put to the test everything their relationship stood for. Stefan and Damon had grown estranged over the years, but would Damon really have let Stefan die in his stead? Or would he have given up his life for the sake of their brotherhood?

And what of the two siblings before him? One sitting at the edge of the Cornucopia, the other tucked tightly into her makeshift bed. Stefan repeated to himself the question that all the tributes, all the people in the districts, and definitely all the Capitol viewers had been asking themselves... Who would Klaus and Rebekah choose in the end? Each other? Or themselves?
