Katherine

She didn't go for the Cornucopia. Instead, as soon as the game began, she bolted off in the opposite direction.

The woods were a mess of brambles and thick trees, but she managed to run a little over a mile without tripping once. With her side hurting so much it felt like it was bleeding, she doubled over and took in multiple shaky breaths. She allowed herself twenty seconds of rest before running another mile. Finally, she stopped at the base of a tree, heaved herself up its branches with immense effort, and collapsed halfway up.

The cannons signaling the deaths of each tribute had begun to fire. She counted each cannon fire in her head. One. Two. Three... Six. Six had died within the first hour of the Games. It was less than the usual amount, but more would die in time.

Katherine waited for the cover of nightfall before dropping to the ground. Contrary to what the Capitol viewers may be thinking of her right now, her plan wasn't to keep running away for the entirety of the games. Sure, she had ditched her district partner, but so what? If she was going to survive, she couldn't spend her time worrying about others.

She prowled through the woods, armed with nothing but her good looks. She froze when she heard the sound of crinkling paper. Peering over the ravine, she could see someone at the bottom, pulling food out of one of the packs that had been littering the Cornucopia.

Katherine thought about how to approach this situation. The tribute down there was a boy, meaning he would have the advantage in the area of strength. But Katherine had the element of surprise by her side. She could jump in now, but why do that when she could just wait for him to fall asleep? It had been a long day, and he was bound to doze off before her.

She waited there for an hour. When the anthem began to play in the distance, she crept up to the boy and lunged at his throat from behind.

It was the District 3 boy- Enzo St John. His eyes bulged at the sudden sight of her. He threw his head back in an effort to get her to let go of her throat, but she refused to let that stop her. Even when his skull collided with her nose, she hung on tightly. Her sharply filed nails dug into his flesh. She reached for the jagged rock she had placed in her pocket and bashed it against his skull. Again. And again. And again. Finally, he became still.

She wasn't going to take any chances, though. As soon as he stopped thrashing, she took the small ax he had been armed with and chopped off his head. A cannon fired, confirming Enzo's death.

Sighing, Katherine took a handful of the dried meat Enzo had been eating, and slowly began to chew. It was too tough and it tasted like rubber.

She climbed back up the ravine just in time to watch the showing of the deceased. The girl from District 3. Both tributes from District 6. And the boys from District 9, 11, and 12. Six were gone. Seven, if she was counting Enzo. Seven were out of the game and seventeen remained.

She would win. She would get out of this place alive and victorious. Katherine Pierce was a survivor, after all.
