Kol

He would die before he let them get to her. He had promised himself this the moment Davina’s name had been called out by the escort of District 8. It was the reason he had volunteered as their district’s male tribute, a feat that had caused several Capitol viewers to swoon in their seats. ‘Dying for love,’ they had sighed from their lavish velvet seats in their pristine white manors.

Thank the heavens, Davina knew how to take care of herself. The moment they had left their platforms, she had raced for the Cornucopia and had gotten her hands on some kind of toxic powder, and she was now using it to blind her opponents so she could attack them more easily.

As for Kol, he got his hands on a well balanced sword and began slicing through the crowd of tributes. Blood flew in arcs and landed on his face, but he didn’t care. He kept close to Davina, and began directing her away from the Cornucopia massacre.

“How many did you get?” Davina gasped as they dove into the woods as fast as their feet would carry them.

“Slashed at four. Not sure all of them are dead, though. You?”

“I killed the girl from District 6.”

District 6… Anna Zhu. “The one who got a score of-”

 “Of seven? Yeah,” Davina said.

Kol knew he shouldn’t feel proud about his girlfriend killing someone, but he couldn’t help it. The Gamemakers had only given Davina a 4 for her training score, and she had just made fools out of each and every one of them.

“Kol, look out!” Davina screamed. She knocked him to the ground as an arrow flew past his head.

“You’ve got to be bloody kidding me,” Kol spat. He spotted the District 6 boy a distance away from them. In his hands was a massive crossbow.

“Go,” Kol said, pushing Davina up to her knees. “Crawl. He won’t be able to aim with all the brambles.”

“That’s Jeremy Gilbert, right?” Davina said as she did exactly that.

“Come to avenge his district partner,” Kol muttered. The sword strapped to his side was making it impossible for him to move. “Keep going.”

“Yeah, I- Kol? What are you doing? Kol!”

Ignoring her, he stood up and charged straight at Gilbert. An arrow stuck itself in Kol’s shoulder, but regardless, Kol drew out his sword and threw it at Gilbert like a javelin.

Kol had never seen so much blood in his life. The sword passed cleanly through Gilbert’s stomach, with the tip protruding from the kid’s back.

Davina scrambled over to Kol and gave him a hard shove. “Don’t do that!” she shouted. “Don’t- Don’t put yourself in danger for me! Do you understand?”

 “I’m fine,” he said.

“You’ve got an arrow shaft sticking out of your shoulder! You are not fine!”

Kol turned towards her exasperatedly, then stiffened in surprise when she buried her head in his chest.

“I’ll be fine as long as I’m with you,” he said quietly.
