Rebekah

She didn't know what to do. She refused to let it show, but she was terrified inside. Beyond terrified.

Niklaus had always been her favorite sibling, just as she had always been his. Though he had a nasty tendency of acting abusive towards her, deep down, she knew he cared about her. But she also knew he craved power. She was half sure that was the reason he had volunteered for the games this year. Not because his sister's name had been reaped, but because of all the fame and fortune that would be bestowed upon him were he to win.

'Stop thinking like that,' Rebekah told herself. Nik loved her. He would sacrifice himself for her.

Right?

'And what about you?' the voice in the back of her head asked. 'Will you sacrifice yourself for him?'

Rebekah didn't see why not. Not a lot was waiting for her back home, and dying to save the person you loved... That wasn't the worst way to go.

Her only regret was never having had a true love in her life. It was all Nik's fault, really. He had scared off every one of her boyfriends, either by threatening to hurt them, or by actually hurting them.

"Bloody hell!" Rebekah shouted at the sight of... What was that? A walking corpse? Had the Gamemakers added a zombie to their midst? Wasn't it enough Rebekah had woken this morning to fire raging all around her?

Just a few hours ago, Nik had shaken her awake. Rebekah hadn't questioned why his shirt was open or why Hayley's hair was all ruffled up, for she had been too busy trying not to choke to death. Smoke rose around them from the dry grass at the clearing's edge, and an absolutely sickening smell had wafted through the air.

"Someone's been burned alive," Hayley had shouted, pulling Bonnie to her feet and kicking Kai awake. The six of them had run down to the lake and hopped inside, carrying as many supplies as they could. From the safe confines of the cool water, they had watched as the entire Cornucopia had filled with fire. Heat had emanated from the metal structure for hours after, like a lethal oven whose temperature had been set to its highest.

With nearly all their food supplies having been reduced to ash, all of them had taken on a mood to kill. They had split into their district groups and had spread out through the arena with the promise to return by nightfall.

Rebekah had been stuck with no one but Nik by her side for hours, and frankly, it had been getting exhausting. That monotony had been broken by the sight of...

"It's the District 5 boy," Rebekah breathed in realization.

"Rebekah!" Nik called after her when she ran towards the blood stained tribute. She had no idea how he was alive, much less walking. His back looked like it had been upturned by a plow. His face was riddled with purple bruises, and a cascading trail of blood had been following his footsteps.

"Marcel?" Rebekah stared, horrified at the brutality of this. She hadn't hesitated at all during the Cornucopia bloodbath, not when she had picked up those razor sharp metal claws, nor when she had torn Nora Hildegard's throat out with her fingers. But this... This was too much.

"Rebekah, what are you doing?" Nik sighed. "He's as good as dead. Leave him be, or put an end to his misery and move on."

"We have to help him," Rebekah murmured.

Nik stared at her like she had lost her bloody mind. "Have you lost your bloody mind?" he shouted. "We're competing in the fight to the death. How the hell are we supposed to get anywhere if you decide to go around trying to heal people?"
