Lizzie

When the District 1 boy killed MG right where he stood, Lizzie didn't know what to think.

"Oh, don't worry," she heard the boy say. "You're next."

Lizzie only just dodged in time. A knife stuck itself in the place she had been standing in before.

"Do something, Bennett!" someone shouted.

Lizzie ran. She ran with all her might, she ran until she was out of breath and her lungs were screaming at her for air. All she'd managed to get from the Cornucopia was a tiny satchel, whose contents Lizzie couldn't risk finding out about in case someone caught up to her.

Finally, she stopped when she came to the mouth of a small cave. It was well camouflaged by the thick vines surrounding it. Lizzie numbly made her way inside and collapsed on the stone ground.

She fumbled with the satchel and drew out three blades the size of her finger, a bottle of iodine, and... That was it. Lizzie spat out a number of unflattering words, loud enough that the damned Capitol viewers could hear her, but still quiet so that no tributes in the vicinity would be able to know where she was.

Lizzie knew it was too risky to stay put in one place, but she didn't care. She missed home. She missed her twin sister and her father. They'd lived a better life than most; Instead of working in agriculture, which was district 11's main industry, her father had been the founder of a small school. Her best memories were of the days she had run around in the grass fields behind the school without a care in the world.

When Lizzie's name had been reaped, Josie had immediately tried to volunteer. Lizzie hadn't let her. In their younger years, Lizzie had done nothing but use and manipulate her quiet sister. But times had changed, and the day Lizzie would let Josie take her place in the Hunger Games was if blood started raining from the sky.

Though, from her current predicament, storm clouds of blood didn't seem so unlikely.

Lizzie kept to the edge of the cave, so that even if someone spotted the cave, they wouldn't be able to spot Lizzie until they were inside. Lizzie clutched the small blades in her hands. She'd never killed before, obviously. She felt like she'd be able to do it if she had no other choice, and yet...

She froze, for she had just heard a sound. Through the gap in the vines, Lizzie saw a short girl with a crossbow making her way straight towards her. Had the girl seen her? Unlikely. The most probable explanation was that she was in need of shelter, and had seen the cave, just as Lizzie had.

'I can take her,' Lizzie told herself. It was the District 12 girl- Hope Marshall. 'I can totally take her.' She tried to ignore the fact that Hope had gotten a whopping 9 from the Gamemakers while Lizzie had received a measly 4.

The moment Hope entered the cave, Lizzie lunged for her. There was no time to be spent on hesitation. Surprise was the only advantage that Lizzie had. Lizzie knocked Hope to the ground and pinned Hope's hands to the ground using her knees. Lizzie raised her knives into the air... But she couldn't do it. Feeling utterly useless and stupid, Lizzie let the knives clatter onto the bed of stone.

Hope stared for a brief moment, then swung the two of them around by hooking her legs around Lizzie's. Hope's eyes were red and swollen; Had she been crying? Lizzie recalled the interviews that had taken place right before the games had begun. Hope's district partner... Landon, was it? The two of them had been called 'The star-crossed lovers of District 12'. Had he died during the Cornucopia massacre?

"Become allies with me!" the words spilled out of Lizzie's mouth before she was fully aware of what she was saying. "Look, I- I'm not ready to kill just yet. And I have to believe you're not, either," Lizzie continued.
