CHAPTER SIX
invitations

Chelsea crossed her ankles as she sat upon John's tailgate. She leaned back against her hands as the students enjoyed the first warm day in Forks, Washington. The sun was still hiding behind the clouds, making the warm day feel more humid than anything.

The snow had melted two weeks after the accident as well as everyone's worry for the two new students. One month in and the accident was already forgotten about - nothing more to gossip over.

John laughed at a joke Mike had burst out, wrapping a casual arm around the blonde's shoulder. She didn't bother to budge his arm as he was getting more comfortable about being touchy with Chelsea. After the accident, the Sherman boy was - for a lack of a better word - obsessed with making sure Chelsea was okay. He claimed that he saw the whole accident, but when she mentioned how Jasper saved her life, his eyes narrowed into a glare at the ground before admitting he didn't see the Hale twin.

Coincidentally, that same twin has been ignoring the existence of the Lockhart teen. Chelsea convinced herself that it was for the better - she had already thanked him properly the day after the accident, and even though he only nodded his head, she thought it was good enough to have closure. She was perfectly fine with giving him the same treatment that he was giving her - which was acting like the other wasn't even there.

Except she did know he was there - every time. She would catch herself glancing over her shoulder when she knew he wasn't paying attention. Her eyes would lock with the side of his head, frowning at the prominent bags that rested underneath his dark eyes, before remembering that she shouldn't care.

"Spring Fling, guys!" Eric exclaimed as he pushed his way to the center of the group. He passed out flyers to everyone, smiles coming to each of their faces.

Chelsea grabbed onto the one that was passed to her, relieved at the title. Girl's Choice. It was a girl ask the boy's dance, which meant that she wouldn't have to reject anyone.

"This is the perfect time to get amped up before prom!" Mike pumped his fist in the air.

"Relax, Romeo," Chelsea taunted with amusement. "You have to be asked first."

Mike didn't look dejected - in fact, his confidence grew at the blonde's words. "Will you ask me?"

John tightened his hold on Chelsea's shoulder as he pulled her into his chest. "We all know my girl will be asking me to the dance."
