The wavey awards is the name for the awards they give out for special members of the surf club. I wasn't a nominee this year, but last year I won Best Tricks, this year I thought I was a shoe in for Most Loyal student. But evidently not. Everyone was crowded round, Josh stumbled up onto the temporary stage which had been set up in front of the sea. It was about 10:30 and getting towards the end of the evening. I was quite tired, the younger kids had been very demanding throughout the barbecue. "Hello, ladies gentlemen." Josh held a few blue cue cards in his hands, he put the one he had just read to the back of the pile. "Thank you for attending our annual beach barbecue." He cleared his throat and adjusted the microphone. "It's been a brilliant turnout this evening, has it not?" The whole crowd wooped and hollered when he said this "Yeah! Okay, now for the exciting part of the evening. The Wavey Awards!" Again, the crowd cheered. "The first award set is for the junior classes, let's start with, most improved student. The nominees this year are... Danika Lopez." I'd seen this girl before, she toddled up on stage, she was no older than five and no surprises, she looked Spanish. She was a tom-boy and was wearing a tiny tux, she waved slowly to the crowd. "George McGreggor." A small red headed boy followed Danika up on stage "Mickayla Sheridan." Josh nudged them all forward and they stood in a line. "The award goes to... Danika Lopez!" She looked very happy, Josh handed her the trophy, it was almost twice her size. She trundled down the steps handling the trophy very carefully.

The awards went on forever it seemed. Josh asked me to present the next one, he said because I helped teach the class I should open for their awards, I walked carefully up the steps, they were fairly steep. "You all look very nice tonight." I said, nodding to the crowd. "The next award is for 12-14 year olds. Now, I have been training in this class for like 6,7 years now. And I want to take the time to thank Josh, for his amazing work towards the beach and the surf club, I hope in years to come more people will be thanking him for the same thing. This award is awesome newcomer. The nominees are: Georgia Taylor" I raised my eyebrows, she must have done well on the sim and made a good impression, she'd only had one lesson. I was sort of jealous, she'd been a member of the club for a day and had already been nominated. I'd been for 7 years and only nominated three times. I didn't like this. "Tiegan Holmes." Never heard of her before either. "Lenny Gray." He went to our school "Cassidy Sheridan." She looked exactly like Mickayla Sheridan from before, they must have been sisters. "And Sadie Allen." Most of them were girls, I wonder why? "And the award goes to..." I pulled the card slowly out of the envelope. "Georgia Taylor." I was jealous, very jealous. One day, one freakin' day she'd been a member, do the people who'd been there for more than half there life get any recognition... Obviously not. I reluctantly picked up the racket and handed it to her, she wanted a hug, but I turned away and looked into the crowd, I saw Julia looking up at me. I smiled, she had seemed a little down lately, she wasn't smiling enough. I tried to cheer her up oftenly. I walked down off of the stage and bustled through the crowd to her. "You were really good up there." She smiled, a pointless compliment but you know, I took it like any nice person would. "Oh, thanks, I'm was kinda surprised the award when to her." Julia looked at me, it was boiling, at least, I was in my tux and all. "Well it was the newcomer award, not like you were gonna win it." I raised my eyebrows and joined in with the clapping as Jed walked up next on stage. "Now this award, it's a special one. Because the people who are nominated, do not know." They'd never done this before, I looked over to Josh. "It's the student of the year award." Josh smiled at me, I had a sudden gut feeling that I'd been nominated. "The nominees are, Beau George, Lizzie Carey and Poppy Juniper." What a name that was, but it didn't take away from the fact she was really nice. "The award goes to..." I Julia smiled at me and crossed her fingers. "Beau George, come on up here Beau." I pushed through the crowd smiling my way past everyone. I walked up onto the stage and Jed handed me the trophy. "Wow. And I thougth I was just serving drinks tonight." The crowd laughed. "I was starting to get jealous of all these awards, but, looks like that was for nothing eh? It's a special thing; being nominated a Wavey Award, and it's an even bigger thing to win one, and I'm so, so grateful for everything the club has done for me, Josh, my instructor and also the coolest guy in the county." Everyone cheered, I looked down off of the stage and over at Josh."This one's for you." I smiled "why don't you come and wrap this thing up." Everyone melted down into a hysteria of laughter and cheering and whooping and clapping, it was clear that the evening had been a big success.
