Dove/Ayla's POV

Age: 10
Location: Ricci's Mansion, New York

I swing my legs off the edge of the roof, trying to ignore the fact that I've lost all feeling in my nose.

And majority of my face.

Nobody else seems to be too bothered by the cold, unlike me. Luca told me that it gets even colder, then it'll start snowing.

As much as I want to see snow, I'm not sure how much longer I can bear the chilly temperatures.

I watch as Lorenzo's car pulls into the driveway. Dante, Dylan, Lorenzo, and Gwenethdolyn exit, laughing as they hand money to one another.

As they walk in, I see Daniel's car pull up as well. Him and the girl with colored hair I saw earlier, exit the car.

I don't wait for the pair to enter the house before slipping back through the open window of my bedroom.

I doubt my parents know I've been going up to the roof, and I doubt they'd like it if they found out.

I rush to the bathroom to rinse my face with warm water, hopefully getting rid of the slight flush caused by the cold weather.

As I turn off the faucet, I hear someone enter my room and close the door. I freeze, listening for the footsteps that usually follow. When I hear none, my heart speeds slightly.

There is only one person in this house, besides me, who consciously muffles their footsteps.

Taking a deep breath to steady my heart, I open the bathroom door.

To my surprise, the girl with colored hair is waiting for me. She smiles widely when she sees me.

"Hey. Daniel told me to come get you for dinner." I nod slowly.

She muffled her footsteps. Was that a conscious choice or an instinct?

"I'm Kaiah, by the way."

"I'm Do-" I cut myself off. That's not my name anymore. "Ayla. I'm Ayla."

"Those were some pretty cool tricks you did this afternoon," she teases as we walk down to the dining room. "Rohann is like three times your size. That was amazing."

"You're the one that can shoot a bow and arrow. That's amazing."

She grins. "I can always teach you."

"Really?" I ask excitedly.

"I don't see why not," she says with a shrug. "You're going to the academy now. I'm sure we can squeeze in some practice time."

"I've never done it before," I admit.

"I'm sure you'll be a natural. Ella says you're a natural at these kinds of things."

"What else does Ella say about me?" I ask. Kaiah grins mischievously, not answering my question as we enter the dining room.

She winks at me before sitting next to Daniel. I take a seat at the end of the table, next to Dante and across from Lorenzo and Gwenethdolyn.

Dinner goes smoothly for the most part, if you ignore the tense looks Gwenethdolyn and I keep exchanging and the obvious tension between Dante and Daniel whenever Kaiah says something. Oh and let's not forget the weird heart eyes Lorenzo keeps giving his girlfriend every two seconds.

If he does it again I might barf.

After half an hour of awkward tension between my brothers and their female friends, I excuse myself.
