Ayla/Dove's POV
Age: 10
Location: Restricted Section of Library, Italian Mafia School (IMS), New York

After a quick math review, an explosion in the chemistry lab, and a delicious lunch with brownies as dessert, I find myself in the restricted section of the library with Mr. Collins.

The restricted section is, quite literally, its own section. There are two large iron gates that block anyone without a key from entering.

As expected, the lock is nearly impossible to pick. A necessary precaution in a school full of spies and assassins who are being taught how to pick locks.

"We wanted to mimic the restricted section from Harry Potter," he explains as he takes a key out of his pocket and slides it into the keyhole.

"What's Harry Potter?" I ask.

Mr. Collins' jaw drops as the iron gates swing open.

"You don't know what Harry Potter is?" He asks incredulously.

I shake my head slowly.

I don't know a lot of things since I, quite literally, was living under a rock my whole life.

"Okay, your homework for the week is to go home and watch the Harry Potter movies," he instructs. "Or read the books. Or do both."

I nod, glad to have some sort of assignment to complete.

As fun as it is to do whatever I want, not having any set rules or assignments is super weird.

I think I might be the only kid who doesn't like all this freedom in school.

"Feel free to look around. There are a lot of interesting books in here," Mr. Collins says.

I wander through the aisles while Mr Collins organises some of the older books in the back. The word 'books' would he an over exaggeration of what he's sorting. The correct term would be 'compilations of papers that can form a book.'

My eyes skim over the titles. Some are in different languages, but my mind immediately translates them.

Some are about spy tactics, others are ancient methods of fighting. I saw one that offers to teach ancient, probably gruesome, ways of torture.

I mentally catalogue that one for later.

Basics of Mind Control and Brainwashing is one of the first title names I read as I turn to enter the next aisle, forcing my feet to come to a halt.

When I read the other titles of the books around it, I realize that this is one of twenty books on the topic.

My mind strays to Angelo's words on the recording.

Her mind will always belong to Vincent.

Did he mean mind control?

Intrigued, I choose one of the older looking books.

In Latin, the title reads The Art of Compliance.

The hard cover, which once was probably a brilliant red, is now dulled to a dark maroon. Some of the lettering on the cover has been rubbed off and the spine is old and weathered.

When I open the book, however, the pages and words are clear. Despite the obvious wear-and-tear of the book, it is still in decent condition.

I hold the large, and albeit, heavy book close to my body as I walk back to Mr Collins.
