Lunch was over, and as the kids settled down, Nichelle called on their attention. "Alright, kids." she began, as everyone got seated and quiet. "Now, take out the pen and notepad from your goodie bag. It's time for a special activity."
The kids went ahead and took out the materials, and listened carefully.
"Miss Rita and I were wondering: how could we make this day even more special for you? ...and we came up with a great idea. Wait here!"- she turned sideways, and made a motion with her right hand, inviting someone in.
The kids looked to the side she was motioning, and immediately gasped. The four officers marched in, straight line, in formation. All in SWAT uniform and with a straight face (except Luca, of course!). The kids were stunned, excited, scared...too many emotions to count! "Woa!" "Wow!" "DAMN!" were heard among whispers.
"We thought"- Miss Rita continued -"what better way to get you started on your future law enforcement careers than to work one on one with a real SWAT officer. How does that sound?"
The cheers and applaud from the group were felt throughout the room, as 20 Squad finished making their way to the front of the conference room. All wearing their uniform, and in complete formation, guided by Hondo and Deacon. Chris and Street joined them from the other side, completing the line. They lined in the front, side by side, as the adolescents whispered and mumbled. Nichelle turned to Hondo, and both exchanged some words, and then, Hondo stepped forward.
"Hey kids!" he greeted. "Miss Rita here tells me y'all wanna be SWAT, huh?"
Cheers, high fives and fist pumps highlighted the smiles across the room. The officers were happy to hear this. Hondo put his arm around Miss Rita's shoulders for a side hug and greeted her. She could only mustered a 'thank you' as her eyes were watery with appreciation. The others got close and greeted her kindly.
Nichelle had left for a quick second, and was greeted with an amazing scene with the kids quiet and attentive to the characters in the front. Hondo was talking about the most important skills and values that all SWAT officers must follow at all time, and his golden rule. He insisted on that if they want to have a career in SWAT, they needed to stop breaking the rules and work hard.
"We don't wanna see anyone of y'all get hurt or in a holding cell. So, you gotta stop this nonsense, ya heard? You truly wanna be a SWAT squad, like us 20 David Squad?"-he paused as the kids nodded and agreed,"It starts right now. Kill that vibe, and get your butts in them classes!"
A round of applause was heard, as Miss Rita nodded, still standing next to Hondo. She moved towards Nichelle, and Hondo sat in the side of one the tables in the front. The tables have been arranged 3 ft apart, as the officers stood behind them.
"So.." Nichelle came from the side room carrying a carton box. Luca, who was closest to her, immediately went to help. She gave him the box, and he placed it next to Hondo. "Now, we have a surprise for you kids."-she definitely had the kids full stare, as all the youngsters followed the box, waiting impatiently, "if you are gonna be SWAT, you need proper gear, right?" She turned to Luca with a bright smile.
"You definitely need to look like SWAT!" Luca added even more excited than the kids themselves, doing his surfer like hand expressions.
"What do you got there, Luca?" Hondo said, turning towards him.
Luca opened the box and took out a piece of clothing. "Hey boss! Look at these sweet suits!" The kids erupted with cheers, some even jumped out of their chairs excited to see gray shirts with the words JUNIOR S.W.A.T. in the front. Luca modeled one, and smiled, while the crowd was going nuts.
"These are cool, definitely. But"- Hondo stopped, which helped calm the kids down. "When you put this on...it's a responsibility! You think these kids are ready for this, Officer Dominique Luca?" he turned his head to look at the kids, who had their head down, feverishly jotting down in their notepads.
