Chapter twenty-four: Then

It's been three years. Three years and they still haven't found you. Have they given up? Or are they still looking? New years was tomorrow and people were skiing on neighboring mountains. The snow was dense and you were locked in because of the snow. The dust was still lingering in the air and you would cough randomly. MI6 hadn't called. Did you expect them to? No. No you didn't. The fire was cracheling and sending heat into the living room. You checked your phone to see the time. It was 2:41 PM. It felt like today had lasted an eternity. Well, all days did. You couldn't believe it had been three years. It had past slowly but quickly. You remembered your first new years in the cabin. Not the ones when you were a kid. The ones in the three year span. For the first year you expected MI6 to call. But they didn't. You could only call and take pictures on your phone because you had no cell reception. Or the internet. Or WIFI. Well, that wasn't true. The WIFI at the cabin sucked.

One day before new years. Next year: 2026. Year when I got here: 2022. It's been three years. Three whole years. And not a single call or text. Not that I could get any texts. Or want them. But life didn't give me what I wanted. I didn't expect it to.

"y/n, this is Nomi, I need to talk to you!" Nomi said.

"We're talking."

"Good point." Nomi said.

"What do you want Nomi?" You asked.

"I'm sorry about what M did three years ago."

"You didn't seem sorry at the time." You said. "And why, now, did you finally call me? It's been three years. Three years Nomi."

"Look, I'm sorry!"

"I doubt that." You said.

"Please don't hang up, I just want to talk!" Nomi blurted.

"I'm listening." You said.

"I really want you to come back to MI6."

"But does M? He's the one that made you 008."

"I talked it over with him, he's fine about it."

"But will you still be 008?"

"Yeah, why wouldn't I?" Nomi said it like it was obvious.

"I'm the original." You hissed into the phone.

"The original what? Double o?" Nomi was getting mad.

"The original 008!" You shouted. "How STUPID are you?!"

"Yeah that's right." You gave yourself the 'it's not a good time for this' look but you just shrugged. "I'm staying y/n. You can't help it."

"Please come back y/n." Nomi wasn't pleading. Or insisting. Not even demanding. Her voice sounded like she didn't want you to come anymore. "M wants you to. I thought I did."

"You thought you did?" You said.

"YES! Don't you have ears!?"

"Yes I have ears!"

"Then why don't you use them?!"

"AT LEAST I HAVE A BRAIN TO PROCESS WHAT I HEAR!" You hollered.

"What?"

"That proves my point." You said. "If M wants me back you tell him that if he really wants me back, he'll have to fire you." Silence. "I thought we were friends Nomi, I really did." You said in a soft voice. "I guess I'm not meant to have friends." This time Nomi hung up. M called an hour and 45 minutes later.

"Hello y/n."

"Hello M."

"Nomi has informed me of your proposal."

"So? What is your decision?" You asked.

"I haven't decided yet." M said.

"You should have called me when you decided." You said. Now all you could hear was the faint crackle in your phone. M was thinking.

"My decision has been made." He said after five minutes.

"Great, what is it?" You asked.

"We will not be accepting your offer."

"What?!"

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We will not be accepting your offer. We will not be accepting your offer.

"Screw them." We will not be accepting your offer. "SCREW THEM!"

"Shoutings not going to help. It never does." The other you said. "It just makes people sad and or mad. It won't help you."

"Shut up." You said, face in your pillow.

"You know I won't do that."

"Just try then."

"You should try."

"Huh?"

"You know what I said. Try. Come on, you can do it. Go to MI6 and tell 'em who's boss!" The other you punched the air enthusiastically.

"I'm not evil anymore." You said. "You should have offered me that in the warehouse. I would have jumped to do it."

"You need that job."

"But do I?"

"Yes. Yes you do. And Nomi doesn't have to be fired in the process. She just doesn't have to be 008 anymore."

"I'll think about it." You said.

"Think quickly then. You don't have much time." The other you was gone.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

You made the decision hours ago. Now you were standing, by miracle, in front of MI6.

"Here goes." You muttered and walked in. You still knew your way around even though it had been four years since you stepped foot into MI6. You walked straight to M's office. Surprisingly Moneypenny wasn't there. You heard footsteps coming your way. Moneypenny. You grabbed a pen and scribbled something onto a notepad on the center on Moneypenny's desk. Tell M to think about making me a double o again. Please. He'll know what you're talking about. -your friend who left four years ago due to getting sadly replaced

You hid just as moneypenny got to her desk. Her face paled as she read the note. She walked into M's office immediately with the note.

Oh there's one part I forgot to mention. P.S. I'm outside your office M. Just open the door and I'm there. The door banged open and M walked out to see you sitting in Moneypenny's chair.

"y/n..." He said.

"Hello." You said. "Care to consider?"

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

You got the job. Nomi still was an MI6 agent. M and Moneypenny had forgotten about the note. For the most part. Something seemed...off. No one would look at you the same. Maybe it was that you'd been gone for four years or the fact that you had to make up two proposals just to get your old job back. Your work was going to be ruff. But with all its ups and downs (it had a lot) it was still good. At least you weren't stuck in a cell like Logan.
