The kingdom felt quiet as Azazel arrived. It was late in the afternoon, the corridors dark, having only the chandeliers above as the light source.
The doors closed behind her, a loud thud echoing through the corridors. Azazel stood there for a moment, frozen in place with her gaze stuck on the carpet floor, her breathing slow as she stood in that particular spot. Subtle rumbles of thunder could be heard in the background as well as the sound of rain hitting the roofs.
Azazel's head turned upon hearing a familiar voice from a corner. Despite the sound being not so clear, she recognized the voice belonging to her mother. It felt like weights were around her ankles as she took a step back. Her arm clutched her top, awaiting her mother's presence, wondering what she might say to her late arrival. Once her mother turned a corner, she noticed Azazel and ran up to her, holding her daughter by her arms.
"Where have you been? You've been gone since the afternoon! Have you eaten dinner?"
Her throat felt tight; she couldn't muster up the courage to answer her mother. She stared at her mother's eyes, filled with worry and concern over her well-being; she gulped, then nodded, opening her mouth to say something despite being at a loss for words.
"I—yes, I've eaten. Don't worry, I-I'm fine." She reassured her mother, who inspected her daughter, noticing her clothes were drenched from the rain. Azazel's lips formed into a straight line, watching her mother worry over her. "Your clothes! Azazel, I told you to bring an umbrella! You'll catch a fever!"
"I-I'm so sorry; I will next time," she stammered, not being able to keep eye contact with her mother—something she learned was rude to do, especially if it was your parent. Her mother's eyes soften as she nods, her grip softening and slowly letting go of her daughter. "If that's the case, you can hurry off to your bedroom. You must be tired; make sure to take a warm shower, okay?" She nodded quickly, eyes darting to the floor. Her fingers clenched the hem of her drenched sleeve as if anchoring herself to the present moment.
"Yes, ma'am." She replies, heading to the stairs. Each step she took was like walking through deep snow. Once she was a few steps away from her mother's view, she paused in her tracks upon hearing her mother's voice again. "Good night, Azazel. Sweet dreams." It took a moment for her to reply.
One whole minute before she answered her mother's greeting,
"You too, mother. Good night.
She ventured up the stairs till she reached her bedroom; the creak of the door echoed throughout her bedroom. The dark void of her sleeping chambers greeted her; Azazel took a step inside before turning on the beautifully decorated lamps she had inside her room.
The unique lamps were masterfully sculpted into different flowers, filling her room with the warmth she needed at that very moment. The mixtures of reds, oranges, and yellows soothed her chaotic mind and nerves. She took her shoes off and set them aside, hanging her purse on the coat hanger before taking refuge in her bathroom.
Taking a shower, a way to cleanse her mind of everything that's happened that day. It was a way to clear her mind just for a little, despite the millions of questions and negative thoughts she'd had that day. Once done, she wore a comfortable pair of pajamas. She got down on her knees, reaching her arm underneath her bed, searching for the diary amidst the boxes she kept underneath. Once her finger felt the shape of a slim rectangular figure, she swiftly snatched it from under the bed and held it in her hands.
She studied the cover, the gold paint used to write the word 'Diary' worn down, her hand grazing against the authentic leather used for the diary's cover. She let out a deep sigh before she unclasped the book, flipping through the pages to see what her mother may have written in this diary.
