My thoughts and heart raced.
It made no sense to me that this annoying boy at school was taking care of his sick father at home.

The words mother said repeat in my mind "he should be here any second."
I couldn't bear to face him. I felt bad.

"Uh... Mom!" I said, trying not to panic. "I-I'm feeling really sick. Can I walk myself home?"
A look of worry crossed my mothers face.
"Really?" She asked. "What are you feeling?"
"Well, I feel really sick to my stomach." That wasn't a lie.
"Well, alright." She said. "Just wait a tiny bit until Gilbert gets here and then we can go home together."

I squirmed. "Mother, please, can't we just go now?"
"Please, be patient Y/n. Gilbert will be here soon, I see him walking up to the house right now."

Right as Gilbert walked up onto the porch I tried my best to find a good place to hide. A place where even mother wouldn't be able to find me...
But it was to late.

I was in the kitchen and mother was chatting with Gilbert in the next room.
I listened to their conversation.

"Mrs. Y/l/n, how have you been?" Gilbert asked kindly.
"Oh, I've been holding up all right, how about you?"
"I'm Okay..." He said in a hushed tone that I could only barely hear. "But my father seems to be getting worse every day." Upon hearing this my heart shattered.
Sure, I hated Gilbert. He really annoyed me. But he didn't deserve that. No one does.

After a few more sad whispers my mother called out to me. "Y/n! Come and meet Gilbert."
I squeezed my eyes shut. Hoping I would disappear and reappear hiding in the safety of my room.
"Y/n!" Mother called me again.

"Get it together Y/n." I muttered to myself.
I clenched my fists and walked out into the entry way where mother and Gilbert were standing.
"Hi." I said plainly. I didnt know what else to say really.
Gilbert looked at me. It kinda seemed like his eyes pierced my soul. I prayed he wouldn't tell mother about what I said to him at the big fire at the Gillis' house.
"Hey."

We stood in sort of an awkward silince before mother broke it. "Well, your father is in his bedroom if you'd like to see him."
"Yeah... alright." Mother and I moved to the side as Gilbert walked between us to get to his father's room.
"He's a nice boy, isn't he?" Mother watched my face as she said this. Was she trying to make me blush? Was she trying to see if I liked him?
"Yeah, he's fine."
Mother nodded and smiled. "Indeed he is. He's kind and works hard for his father."
"Yeah." I replied.
"Does he do well in his studies?"
Why was she asking all this?
"Yeah, he does pretty well." This was an understatement. Gilbert was the second smartest student in our school, Anne was first and Diana was third.

After a few minutes Gilbert came back into the entry way with us.
"Thanks for all your help Mrs. Y/l/n, and Y/n, of course." He nodded at me as he said my name.
"Oh, it's no problem. We're happy to help, aren't we, Y/n?"
"Yeah, we are."

"Well, you can go home now if you're ready." Gilbert announced. I was relieved.
"Actually," Mother said. "I have a few things I need to finish up here. Would you mind walking Y/n home?"
I was not relieved.

"Y- sure. I can."
