After school Gilbert Blythe offered to walk me home from school.
Anne and Diana saw this and giggled behind Gilbert's back.
Diana mouthed "SAY YES." Anne nodded.
He didn't see them, but I did.
"Uh, yeah, sure." I said happily, my eyes darting to my friends to glare at them.

"Well, alright! We can get going if you want." He said awkwardly, scratching the back of his neck. Gilbert often blushed and stuttered around me, more than he does with others. I wondered why.

I said goodbye to my friends and Gilbert and I set off on the well used path that most of the students, including Anne and I, used to get to school.
"Would you wanna come over to my house for lunch sometimes? Your mother too, of course." He asked as we walked through light snow.

"Sure! As long as your father is okay with it." I replied, smiling at him. "I'll ask mother when I get home."
"Okay, great."

As we walked I felt Gilbert's eyes on the back of my head. I turned around to him staring at me.
"Are you okay?" I asked, slightly worried.
He had a thoughtful look on his face and he stared right at me.
At the sound of my voice, he popped back into reality. "Oh, s-sorry. Got lost in thought." He laughed. I shrugged it off.
It was kind of strange though. I wonder what he was thinking about.

Curiosity got the better of me and I worked up the courage to face him and ask. "Gilbert. What were you thinking about while you were staring at me?"
Gilbert stopped in his tracks, blushing.
"I-I... nothing." He stammered. His cheeks turned even redder. It was cute.
"Well... alright." I responded. I didn't believe him one bit, but maybe it was something personal. I didn't want to seem too nosy... although I was still very curious.

Gilbert dropped me off at home and now I was inside the house with mother. She was starting dinner and I was sitting at the table talking to her about my day.

"I was going to walk with Anne and Diana like usual, but Gilbert offered to walk me home, and Anne and Diana didn't mind, so I said yes."

"You've been hanging out with that boy an awful lot lately." Mother said, keeping her back to me.
"Uh... Yeah, I guess." I said, hoping the conversation wasnt going where I thought it was.
"Do you like him?" She asked, saying it in a voice that made it seem like she thought it was no big deal.

My face burned red.
"What? No!" I replied quickly.
"Hmm..." She said. It was like she was deciding if she believed me or not.
"Alright." She said. "If you say so."
My face was still red. It was a good thing mother was too busy cooking to see it.

When I went up to my room later the interaction was still on my mind.
Why would she even ask me that? I wondered.
Did it seem like I liked him? Because I didn't. I think.
