Yasmin watched the wedding from afar completely delighted. It was just like she had seen in so many romance movies. The couple always found a way to stay together and get married in the end.
Gisele, next to her, felt pure envy. Of the beauty, the extravagance, the importance, even the love. But she was too smart to let herself be carried away by silly feelings. Or show them in any way. She was there on business, she couldn't let Sofia down. On the other hand, it was also an unmissable opportunity to meet some rich people that could boost her career. Life didn't give her so many chances that she could waste one like that.
"Yasmin, make sure that no dessert is left out, I'll be right back."
"Are you going to leave me here alone?" Yasmin answered uncertainly. She had already dropped a tray when she was setting the table and she tripped over one of the rugs. She wasn't prepared to take on a party that size, Gisele couldn't leave her alone.
"I'm just going to the restroom. Can you not mess anything up for five minutes?"
"I think... I think so."
"This is your chance to show Sofia that you can handle events." Gisele pointed.
She was right. Yasmin was a bit clumsy, but she was trying hard to improve and to show Sofia how much she liked her job, regardless of her mother. She could have gotten the job because of Mrs. Maria, but she wanted to stay there on her own merit. And who knows, maybe one day she will become a boss as amazing as Sofia. She was already saving up for a culinary class that she saw advertising at the bus stop.
"That's fine," she said. "Take your time, I'll take care of everything." Yasmin replied.
This was exactly what Gisele wanted to hear so that she could stay away from work longer without someone noticing. Yasmin would be committed to showing that she could handle the replacement, and with that, even more focused on not causing trouble to realize how long Gisele would take. And she would take her time. Especially if she managed to engage a dialogue with some businessman interested in investing in the career of a young baker. She wandered slowly among the guests, listening to parts of conversations and trying to identify the best targets to interact with. There were so many people, it was sure to take longer than she had anticipated. It was good that Yasmin didn't do anything bad while she was gone. She deserved a taste of what it was like to live with the elite.
From watching the guests, she thought she caught a glimpse of a familiar face. She stepped towards the figure and then recognized Larissa Lopes, her great childhood friend. And by great, she meant great disturbance.
She still remembered vividly when Larissa had invited her to join her friends in a science working group. They were to meet at the leader's house to do homework and have a sleepover. The party actually happened for the other four in the group, but Gisele was forced to sit in the office all night doing the assignments by herself.
It was not possible that she was there as a guest at such a fancy wedding as Sofia's sister's. And she was there as a simple assistant for sweets. Larissa couldn't see her like that. Soon the person who bothered her the most with false compliments, false support and false friendship. Gisele wasn't the only one Larissa treated that way, yet she didn't know if the others had marks as deep as she did.
With such a dysfunctional family, Gisele turned to her school friends for support. And her friends were anything but that. For her effort and dedication, her classmates traded attention for assignments and homework, taking her credit. This shook her confidence in herself and others. Was she not capable of making friends? Did no one like her? No one wanted to be by her side? Was the problem her or others? Just see her old schoolmate a few feet away and all the insecurity she felt in her long school years came back with force. She didn't want to deviate from the purpose of being there, yet it was hard to show the self"confidence she didn't feel.
