Carl's P.O.V.
As I opened the for for her to walk in first, I asked one final question. I had been pestering her the whole walk home about how she survived. However, she never once had she made eye contact with me while explaining. I was just so curious how she did it.

"So, Dallas, he was your dog?" I asked.
"Yep," she said, still looking down, "they took him when they took my mom and Gabe." She trailed off.

"Who's Gabe?" I asked.
"Oh uh..," she stuttered, looking around nervously, " He is.. he was.. My boyfriend."

Boyfriend?

"Oh." I said like the idiot I am.
"Carl, I think he is gone, along with my mother and Dallas. He is out of my life. Sure, I want them back everyday, and in the normal world, I wouldn't give up. But this is becoming our normal world and that's the only thing I can do. I refuse to let myself feel absolutely no happiness at all because of false hope of seeing them. I never think about it because it makes me want to pack up and search, but that's not what they would have wanted. They would've wanted me to be as happy as any normal person could be in this awful world today." She finished, staring deep into my eyes during her heart-felt paragraph.

All I could do was nod as we walked in.
I closed the door behind me, "Well look who's home!" I heard Enid's voice from the kitchen as I started heading there behind Emma.

Emma stood in the kitchen, setting down her freshly picked basket of vegetables on the counter; mouth open.

"Well c'mon son, eat!" My dad said, gesturing toward the highly decorated table and seating.
Emma looked at me, the  quickly looked away.

Enid pulled the baked potatoes out and the corn, the fish, and set them down. Given Emma a glare that she didn't know I caught.

Emma put all the vegetables in the refrigerator and turned toward my room.
"Actually dad," Emma stopped and barely turned her head to listen, " I'm kind of tired, I think I am going to go to bed."
"Suit yourself, night." My dad said as he chowed down on the food. Enid stood there, mouth closed tight and eyes narrowed.

I smiled cruelly at her and walked to my room. When I got there Emma was asleep. She wore her boy-short underwear, reminding me of this morning, and my white T-shirt, oversized for her, to cover them barely.
I climbed in after changing into my gray boxers.
I listened to Enid slamming the dishes around, and taking one last look at Emma, I fell asleep.
