Are You Sure?

Chapter 7

Emma's P.OV.
"Carl. You need to wake up.. now." I hear Enid's voice, creeping into my peaceful sleep.
"What the hell Enid?" Carl curses at her with his raspy morning voice.
"Get up." She says bitterly.
"Why? What's going on?," he says, turning his back to face toward Enid, " Wait is Emma..." He turned toward me, " oh thank God."
"Ugh." Enid said, rolling her eyes."Would you stop it? We have to drag the she-devil out of your bed and back to where we found her. In her lonely little shed."

If she didn't think I was sleeping, she'd be drifting in and out of consciousness right about now.

"No." Carl said.
"B-" Enid started.
"NO." Carl affirmed, "Now leave me alone and let us sleep."
"Us?" Enid said disgusted, and I let a small giggle slip from my lips.
"Wh-she..she's awake Carl! She 's eavesdropping on us." She said, trying to sound like she was hiding a big secret between them.
"No she's not, now get out." Carl says.

Carl normally would never say something something like that to a girl, or to anyone really. Maybe he is just a little cranky from being woken up.

After she left, I closed my eyes again and right when I was about to drift to sleep when I heard him open his mouth.

"I know you're awake. I know you to well."
I gave a little fake snore to try to convince him I was sleeping.
"Or not." He said.

I peeked a little through one eye to see what he was doing.
Taking one piece of my hair, he pushed it behind my ear.
My lips part because of the tingling that went down my back because... it's cold, yeah that's it.. just cold.
He looks at the goosebumps on my arms and I go to pull up the blankets, but he does it and lays me in his bare chest.
God he smells so good. He smells like peppermint. Just a soft and subtle peppermint.
I slide my hand up to the back of his neck and into his hair.
He trembles and I hold him closer.

Suddenly the image of Gabe comes into my head and I pull back.
He looks confused and a bit scared.
"I'm sorry, Gabe - Carl... I meant." I say jumping out of my... -the...-his bed.
I run out of his room and sit against the wall outside.

I start sobbing, "Gabe, please get out of my head!" I practically scream. I hallucinate him sitting next to me.
"Gabe, I'm sorry! Please.., "I stop to breath in, "Stop!" I rub my temples frantically and rip through my hair.

"Emma." I hear him say. "Stop pushing me out. You know I love you. I want you to be happy. Push me away. You are thinking about me!"

All the sudden it stops. "Emma?" I hear Carl call for me.
"Down here." I say, avoiding his ocean eyes.
He slides down next to me. "It's okay. I understand."
"No you don't Carl. The guilt of leaving my family and never searching for them overwhelms me. I always constantly hallucinate of them."
"Guilt can overwhelm you. But Emma," he pulls my chin to look at him, " they were taken away from YOU. You said it yourself, they would want you to be happy and live a normal life."

"I know, but I can't help it.," I say, "I need your help." I say, starting to cry again and I lean into him.
He rubs my shoulder and kisses my head. "I can and will help you, Emma, I promise."

I need a shower. I say to myself.

" Okay." I say wiping my eyes, "I am headed for the shower.."
