Emma wakes up. Heart pounding, mouth dry, vision blurry, and memory coming back in line. She recognizes Carl, a boy she went to school with.
Will she catch up with him, or leave him behind because of personal commitment issues. She doesn't trust any...
"Gabe?" She asks. Emma's face turns more pale than mine. He stood up and slowly walked toward her. She stood still, not taking her eyes off of him. He places his hands on either side of her fair face. He starts to smile. She grabs his hands and drops them. She turns and runs out. I hear a slam from the front door.
Gabe sits down on the toilet lid.
I took off after her.
"Emma!" I yell.
I looked around and see her throwing up in the dirt.
"Oh, Emma." I say, holding her hair back. She turns around grabbing me and holding me closely. "I can't do this. I'm scared." She whispers.
"It's okay. It's Gabe. He won't hurt you." I try comforting Emma. But I don't like this 'Gabe' character. "I know. But, I haven't seen him since this whole thing started. I don't want to face him." She leans back and I can see how scared she is.
"I know he is from your past life. It's an even better reason to see him." I reassure her. "Okay." She replies.
We start walking back toward our house, when she pulls out the Altoids that she always keeps in her pocket. She puts three in her mouth and offers me some. I take two and as I look down at the ground, I see her picking at her scabbed knuckles. I reach down, "Don't. It'll only make it worse." I say. She nods in compliance as we reach the house.
I open the door and there he is, on the couch. He jumps up and hugs her. She awkwardly wraps her arms around him. "How did you find me?" She asks. "I was wondering aimlessly, and then I saw your backpack outside this big wall. I ran over to it and realized that it was for sure yours' because of the bracelet I gave you wrapped around the zipper." He says. "Oh." Is all she has to say.
"Hi." I extend my hand, "I'm Carl. It's nice to meet you." I say. He extends his hand and shakes mine. "Oh. Carl!" He says, "Before all this, Emma used to talk about you a lot. You were her best friend."
Before all this? He talks about it like it's going to end. Like, it's a phase of this world or something. "Yeah. Still am." I say. He nods and looks at Emma.
"So, show me around?" He asks.
This isn't awkward for him at all. He treats Emma like they haven't been separated for this long. His optimism is sickening to my realism. I lost the optimism long ago.
She nods, "Uh. Sure." She is still pale. I watch them walk out. I sigh and sit on the couch.
Emma's P.O.V. "So, this is our garden. Infirmary." I say, pointing around. He nods at everything that I say. Rick doesn't even know he's here yet. I barely just got here. I'm already imposing a stranger, which is dangerous nowadays.
"You'll never believe who's here." I say in excitement, remembering that he knows Maggie. I'm desperately trying to keep up conversation.
"Yeah?" He looks at me. -end-
