I've worn many pairs of shoes
-from tall sparkly heels to ragged sneakers
I've been a depressed daughter and a smiling son
In this adventure of a lifetime, I've been scared but never decided to run
I've crossed long bridges with kind, reliable faces
-only to turn around and see them demolished and burnt
I know I wouldn't want to turn back anyway
-not after all that has happened, even with the piercing hate
There will be a day I'm out of the woods,
of that I have no doubt,
but being without support has forced me to light a fire in myself
It is all about survival when it comes to coming out
Through the dirty window of a cramped car,
full of cardboard boxes and some thrifted clothes,
I see the seasons change as I keep behind the steering wheel
I see vibrant flowers rise and wilt and I know I'm not on my own

NOTE: There is a lot happening right now in regards to trans rights and trans youth protections being so messed up. As someone who came out as trans young and I'm now 23, I just want to send all of my energy and love to anyone who needs support or needs to know they aren't alone. I found a poetry contest earlier that I was interested in and then the rules clarified it had to be "clean" and they specified clean with nothing in reference to "sexuality or gender controversies". Books are being banned, they're starting to punish supportive families, and they really view us as a flaw in the system. Your life is not a controversy. Your rights are not negotiable. Being trans is not a flaw or a political statement. No matter how hard they try to wipe us out through policies and bills, through religion or emotional abuse, stay strong. If you need a friend, message me.
