"What was that so urgent you needed to talk to me about," I asked Annabeth once we found ourselves at Starbucks. Why does it feel as if she were going to reveal a dark secret? The way she fidgets with her fingers and doesn't stop shaking her legs draws me towards that conclusion. "I like someone," I hear her say. Oh so that's what this is about. She finally got over that punching bag with the name of Jaxon. "Are you going to tell me who that someone is or am I going to have to guess it," I ask. "It's Andrey," she says after an uncomfortable silence. Ok, I guess it seemed expected. "You don't need help to conquer him, Anna, because I'm pretty sure you'll have Andrey's heart by being yourself. However I do consider him my brother. He's one of my boulders as is Cleo. So if you hurt him in any way I'll make you regret it for the rest of your life. Understood?" I ask after threatening her.
"Really understood. You don't seem upset."
"Why would I seem upset?" This girl can be really confusing at times.
"The way you two always seemed to prefer to be around each other took me to the conclusion there was attraction between both of you."
"I'm not going to lie and say I don't consider him attractive but he's definitely not my type and I would unequivocally consider any affection towards me and towards him as nothing more than what a brother and sister feel towards each other." I explain to her.
"Ok I guess I misread everything. However there's something else we need to talk about but it also includes Andrey and Cleo."
No, no, and no. I don't agree with this. Why in the world would she want us to waste our precious time with someone so...what's the word? Ah, preposterous. That's the word that describes Aaron.
"I guess we'll have to make this decision by voting," I hear Anna say. "Who considers this a good idea?" Annabeth's hand automatically shots up. Cleo's (who we will now call the traitor) hand goes up doubtfully. Both Andrey and I look at her with a raised eyebrow. "What? Everyone deserves a chance for a happier life don't you think," she says looking towards us.
"He has to prove he deserves it." Andrey says after a while being silent.
"If he only wants to hang out with us after school it isn't worth it. I don't want to be near anyone who feels embarrassed by spending time with us," he explains himself.
"It'll only be two weeks, Andrey. If he doesn't accept us by that time he'll be out of our lives forever," says Cleo.
"Not forever if we consider the fact that he'll still be Anna's friend," I point out.
"Another reason that justifies our decision," says Andrey.
"The two of you are just being unfair with him. Haven't you heard the saying 'never judge a book by its cover'. Just because Aaron is popular doesn't mean he is a bad person," claims Annabeth.
"I don't know, maybe the fact that he goes around school shoving kids and denigrating them takes me to the conclusion that he isn't the type of person you describe. Haven't you heard that actions speak louder than words." I argue.
"Ok maybe he isn't the best person out there but don't you remember what he did for Annabeth," says Cleo now taking the word.
Of course I remember what he did for Annabeth. As well as I also remember that he asked me to help him get her friendship back. However, that just demonstrates that he cares about Anna. Nothing else. Pero por algo se empieza, ¿no?
"Spending time with him should be considered a sacrifice, so it'll only be fair that we are not the only ones that sacrifice something," I say to the three of them. Cleo smiles, Andrey's frown lightly decreases, and Annabeth has a worried expression on her face.
"He'll help Andrey in his father's gym," I say, "take it or leave it."
"I'll have to talk to him," says Annabeth.
"Hola mija, how was the talk with your friends?" asks my dad as soon as I walk through the door. I walk up to him and give him a hug while he kisses my forehead.
"Good papi, guess what?"
"Umm....did you bring food?" He asks with a smile on his face.
"Yes papi, I brought pizza!" I scream and his smile gets even bigger.
Live, love, laugh. That's the expression that decorates our dining room wall. Our house is full of laughter, love, and life. However, I've never seen my dad introduce me to any girlfriend. Has he had any? Did his heart die with Marisol, his late wife? Everytime he talks about her and Celeste, his daughter, his eyes have a special glow in them. A glow that isn't always present.
"Papi, can I ask you a question?"
"You already did," he says, keeping his eyes on the game. Our favorite team Tigres is playing against Las Chivas. Yup, I know. I chose the perfect moment to have this conversation with him.
"Can I ask you three questions?" I ask.
"Sure, mija. I'm all ears," he says with his eyes still glued on the TV screen. Ni modo, I guess I can't count on a normal conversation with him.
"After Marisol died, have you had any other loves?" I finally have the courage to ask. As soon as I mention her name his eyes immediately look at me.
"Marisol was the love of my life and that accident took her away from my side forever. I learned to live with that agony in my heart. When she died, mija, the sentimental part of my heart went into a deep sleep. Yes, I have met different ladies but none of them have what it takes to awaken my emotions."
"Why haven't I met any of those ladies?" I ask. I can't help but think that he maybe doesn't want them to find out about me.
"Selena, you're the only treasure I have left. If those ladies weren't enough to awaken my emotions they were definitely not worthy of meeting you." That definitely reassured me. For a second I thought he hid my existence from them.
"I love you, papi," I say while hugging him.
"I love you too, princesa guerrera."
"Now tell me how do you imagine that lady who will awaken the sleeping warrior," I say in a burlesque tone.
"Ah princesa, that's something only time can tell," he says.
"GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL!"
The victory scream coming from the TV distracts us from our conversation and brings us back to reality. The Tigres are playing and they just scored another goal. The score is 3-0, which means we are in the lead. I look at my dad and we immediately start commenting on the game.
I finally found a spoon worthy of touching my choco-flan and driving it to my mouth. That chocolatey bottom, with that creamy top with just the perfect hint of coffee is waiting to be savored by my taste buds. Delicious! My mouth waters by just looking at it, waiting for the perfect time to insert it into my mouth. RRRRRRIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIINNNNNGGGGG!!!!!!!!!!
UGH! My alarm clock just ruined my perfect dream. Why does the alarm clock always remember to wake me up whenever I'm about to enjoy my heavenly dessert.
"Why the bad mood, princesa?" My dad asks as soon as I get into the car.
"I woke up before I got to taste my choco-flan," I say with a pout.
"Ay mija, you always know how to make my day," he says with a chuckle.
Mhhhmmm.
