Chapter 4

Leafpaw woke up excitedly. Today, she and Rosesplash would be going to the Moonpool. She jumped to her paws and bounded to the entrance of the apprentices' den. There was three new apprentices, so it was a bit crowded in the apprentices' den.

"Why are you awake so early?" Maplepaw groaned, waking up as Leafpaw accidentally stepped on his tail. "Do you have to do the dawn patrol or something?"

"Uh Embershade wants me up early to search the elders for ticks," Leafpaw lied quickly.

"Oh that's bad," Maplepaw yawned. "What did you do to ruffle his fur?"

"Nothing," Leafpaw growled. "No apprentice has done it in a while."

"I can help you," Maplepaw meowed immediately.

"I'm fine," Leafpaw replied. "Go back to sleep will you?"

"I'll go back to sleep when I'm ready, thank you very much," Maplepaw snapped.

"Oh um, I should be going now," Leafpaw turned away and started heading out of the den.

Leafpaw felt the wind ruffle her fur as she ducked outside. It was getting colder, it was leaf-fall.

Leafpaw spotted Rosesplash beside the entrance of the camp and bounded toward her, but was stopped by Embershade.

"Where are you going?" Embershade demanded. "Why are you awake so early?"

"Well I was going to hunt!" Leafpaw exclaimed, her eyes flashed briefly. "So?"

"You should check in with me first," Embershade growled. "So now you'll be with me in the dawn patrol since you're up so early."

"Embershade." Rosesplash padded toward them.

Embershade turned his head to see Rosesplash. "What?" Embershade muttered. "Can't you see I'm busy, scolding Leafpaw?"

"If Leafpaw wants to go hunting, she can come with me," Rosesplash explained. "I'm going hunting myself, so I can bring her along."

"Are you sure?" Embershade asked. "She can be hard."

"I'm fine," Rosesplash meowed, blinking affectionately at Leafpaw. "Come on, let's go now."

Leafpaw nodded and followed Rosesplash out of the camp, leaving Embershade behind.

Leafpaw and Rosesplash padded silently, but Rosesplash broke the silence after a moment. "The Moonpool is far from here."

"What is it like meeting StarClan?" Leafpaw asked. "Who am I going to meet?"

"I've only been there once," Rosesplash told Leafpaw as they padded though the undergrowth of the forest in ThunderClan territory. "When I was an apprentice. You'll see the Moonpool again later once Embershade thinks your ready."

"Who am I going to meet?" Leafpaw repeated.

Rosesplash shrugged. "It could be anyone," Rosesplash replied. "Mostly it will be your old Clanmates."

"Will you talk to Leafnose?"

"Maybe," Rosesplash murmured, looking away. "I don't know if she'll talk to me though."

"You're her littermate!" Leafpaw exclaimed.

Rosesplash sighed. "We had many fights as warriors," Rosesplash explained quietly. "Most of them we made up, but some we didn't."

"Oh," Leafpaw meowed. "I'm sorry-"

"Quiet!" Rosesplash hissed, interrupting her as they reached the NightClan border. "I don't want us to be caught by a NightClan patrol."
