Leafkit excitedly pushed away the mossball in front of her toward her denmate, Mousekit. Mousekit passed it on to Maplekit, her littermate. They were playing mossball with the younger kits in the clearing.

"Are your ready for our apprentice ceremony?" Leafkit called to Maplekit, suppressing a purr of amusement as Maplekit's dark ginger fur was fluffed up and not as sleek at her own fur.

Maplekit nodded, his tail swishing side to side as he waited for Frostkit to pass it on to him.

Leafkit and Maplekit were 5 moons. In a moon, they would become apprentices and she was so excited! What kit wouldn't be excited to learn how to become a warrior? Leafkit wondered.

Leafkit's gaze strayed to where Rosesplash was sitting. Rosesplash was her older sister, but always acted weirdly affectionate around her.

"Frostkit!"

Leafkit immediately turned back to the other kits. Maplekit was on the ground looking dazed with Frostkit, looking triumphant on top of him. The mossball was beside them.

Leafkit padded toward them. "What happened?" Leafpaw demanded, startled. "Are you hurt, Maplekit? Shall I get Blueshadow?"

"Frostkit threw the mossball so hard!" Maplekit complained, letting out a growl of anger. "He almost killed me."

Leafkit felt Lilykit's warm fur as she came up beside her. "Well he didn't," Lilykit retorted, gazing at Maplekit with disgust. "It's just a game. We're younger then you, you're supposed to be more resilient."

Maplekit gazed at Lilykit hesitantly before turning to Leafkit. "Go on, stand up for me," Maplekit ordered. "Your my littermate after all."

Leafkit let out a purr of amusement, sniffing at Maplekit's now dusty fur. "Stand up for yourself," Leafkit replied then hesitated before adding. "I can't always stand up for you, Maplekit. We'll be apprentices soon."

Maplekit snorted. "But they are standing up for each other," Maplekit snapped, starting to groom his fur.

Frostkit looked at his paws, embarrassed. "I'm sorry I threw it hard," Frostkit apologized, but his eyes gleamed with mischief. "But I didn't know that it'll hit you right in the face and knock you over."

Maplekit sighed and then licked the younger kit's ear. "I accept your apology," Maplekit answered wearily. "But don't do it again."

They played again, passing it back and forth, but Leafkit was getting hungry, so she left early and padded to the fresh-kill pile. To her surprise, her father, Foxclaw was there, chatting with Silverpool.

"Leafkit!" Foxclaw greeted as soon as he saw her. "Do you want a mouse?"

Leafkit nodded quickly and Foxclaw pushed a big mouse toward her. Leafkit started eating it, it was very juicy and delicious.

"I caught it," Foxclaw told her proudly, licking her ear. "I hope you like it. One day, you'll be hunting like me for the Clan."

"Yes," Silverpool agreed. "Wouldn't it be nice if I be your mentor? I know you'll be good since Foxclaw is your father." Silverpool added with a shy glance at Foxclaw.

Foxclaw looked annoyed, dipping his head. "Your mother is the best at hunting," Foxclaw meowed, ignoring Silverpool. "I hope you inherit her skills, not mines. I'm very bad at battle training."
