Chapter 2

It was a beautiful sunny day as the warm sunlight shone into the LeapClan camp. Many cats were sunning themselves, letting out quiet sighs of relief that the sun was here.

As the sun rose higher into the sky, Leafkit could hardly sit still as Blazepoppy started to groom her. It was time for her apprentice ceremony and she was so excited.

"You told Eaglestar about Rosesplash?" Leafkit had asked multiple times.

"Yes," Blazepoppy had answered, exasperated. "He maybe will do it." Blazepoppy turned to Maplekit for a quick lick to flatten his fluffed up fur on his flank.

Leafkit was now waiting patiently with Maplekit to her side. Eaglestar was on Leapingrock, his head high and looking proudly at them.

Foxclaw padded over and licked each of them. "I'm so proud of you two!" Foxclaw purred. "Listen to everything your mentors say."

"Who was your mentor?" Maplekit asked eagerly.

"Was Blazepoppy your mentor?" Leafkit added.

Blazepoppy was several seasons older then Foxclaw. When Foxclaw became an apprentice, Blazepoppy had already been a warrior for a moon.

Foxclaw let out a mrrow of amusement. "She didn't," Foxclaw answered with a sly glance at Blazepoppy. "Ravenwing was my mentor." He flicked his tail at the black tom who was sharing tongues with Frogtail.

Blazepoppy snorted. "He wasn't a great mentor." Blazepoppy meowed briskly.

Foxclaw smiled. "He taught me everything I needed to know," Foxclaw replied. "Anyways I wonder why he hasn't retired yet. He's getting too old for warrior duties."

"He wants to serve his Clan," Blazepoppy pointed out. "Wouldn't you want to stay a warrior for a long time?"

Foxclaw was about to reply, but Eaglestar let out a loud yowl. "Let all cats gather around Leapingrock for a Clan meeting!"

"You're so lucky!"

Leafkit turned her head to see Lilykit. Leafkit licked Lilykit's ear. "It'll be your turn soon," Leafkit promised. "It's only in three moons!"

"Three moons!" Mousekit complained from behind them. "I rather eat crow-food then wait three moons!"

"Mousekit!" Blossomflight, Mousekit's mother, exclaimed. "You should be grateful, you're even going to become an apprentice."

Leafkit nodded and was about to reply when Maplekit gave her a nudge.

"Come on flea-brain," Maplekit hissed quietly. "Don't you see Eaglestar is waiting for us?"

Leafkit's eyes widened and then quickly followed a Maplekit to where Eaglestar was waiting.

Eaglestar blinked at them warmly then began. "These kits have reached the age of six moons and are ready to begin their warrior training," Eaglestar announced. "From now on, these kits will be known as Leafpaw and Maplepaw."

"Leafpaw! Maplepaw! Leafpaw! Maplepaw!" The Clan called.

Leafpaw puffed her chest out in pride as every cat called her name and Maplepaw's.

"Maplepaw, your mentor will be Silverpool," Eaglestar meowed, beckoning to the silver-gray she-cat. "Silverpool, you are a very loyal and dedicated warrior. Share your skills to Maplepaw!"

Leafpaw saw Maplepaw and Silverpool touch noses. Maplepaw was whispered excitedly to Silverpool as they went into the crowd of cats.

Leafpaw gulped and then faced Eaglestar as he began to say her mentor.
