Chapter 18- If Only

-Jacob's point of view-

I looked over at Cali who looked just as pissed off as I was. There was no way in hell that her Dad was going to take her away. I just got Cali back and that doesn't mean Steve can jump in and act like some hero coming to save the day.
Sure both of Cali's parents are screwed up but I'd rather she'd live with her alcoholic mom.
"You heard me, I want custody, oh, and Tyler's funeral is next week."
Who does that?! Cali stayed silent for a few seconds and then she started to shout at Steve, her voice laced with anger. "You seriously have the nerve to talk to me like that after eight years and Tyler's death."
"I just found out his cause of death." Steve continued. "He died from drug abuse. Apparently he had some in his pocket."
"Tyler has never done drugs."I snapped.
Cali looked at me sadly, her face white. "I've caught him once before. Just once."
Tears welled in her big brown eyes.
"I-I thought it was-was a one time thing. I-I should've told someone." Cali was going to have a break down.
Steve looked at her with an amused smile.
"Get the hell out of here!" I yelled.
Steve laughed coldly. "I need to watch little Miss Perfect break down."
Cali bit her lip, trying to hold back the tears. Mouse started to bark and he clawed at the bathroom door.
I walked over to Steve and slammed my fist into his face. "Don't you dare treat Cali that way." I kept punching Steve until Cali quietly pulled me off of a bloodied and beaten Steve.
"I'll call the hotel's Janitor." Cali's voice barely a whisper.
**
I laid down next to Cali and turned on the tv. "Ready for school tomorrow?"
"I thought today was Saturday?"
I did remember telling Cali it was Saturday. . ."No, it's Sunday," I looked at my phone to show her the date.
"Yeah, I'm going to deal with a lot of shit tomorrow."
Tyler dying. Steve coming back. Tyler's drug abuse. Ryan. Her mom in the hospital. Her mom an alcoholic. My mom not liking her. Me being adopted. Her friends not knowing Tyler is dead. Her friends not knowing half the crap going on right now.
"I'll be there for you, Baby." I stated.
Cali nodded and stared blankly at the tv. "I don't know if I can do this anymore, Jacob."
"Do what?"
"All of this, I can't handle this all at once." Cali's bottom lips wobbled.
My heart shattered into a million bits. If only I would've been there for her earlier. If only I could help Cali deal with all of this.
"Baby, Cali, Please don't cry, I can help you get through this I'm here." "Tomorrow you don't have to tell Hayden, Casey or Brooke I will." I added.
Cali threw her arms around me and I held her as if she was going to slip right through my grasp.
"I love you," Cali mumbled into my shirt.
"I love you," I tilted Cali's face towards me and I kissed her tenderly. She lazily tugged at my bottom lip.
I wrapped my arms even tighter around her small frame. Cali pulled away hesitantly to breathe.
"Jacob, I think you should do that again." She breathlessly ordered.
"You're the one who pulled away." I smirked.
Cali sighed and grabbed my face and smashed my lips into hers. I could get used to this. Cali's hand raked through at my hair. Her other hand was traveling towards the hem my shirt. I should stop her. She's not thinking straight. I lightly pulled her hand away from the hem of my shirt.
Cali backed away from me and jutted out her bottom lip. "Why not?"
"Cali, we have school tomorrow and you're just not thinking straight after all that's happened."
"I wasn't going to go that far." She crossed her arms defiantly.
Smooth Jake.
"Well, I'm not going to take my shirt off just yet."
"Fine." Cali went to let Mouse out of the bathroom and then she made her way to her separate bed.
"Cal, C'mon, don't be like that."
No answer.
"Baby, I need my cuddle buddy."
Again, no answer.
"California, come back,I'm sorry." I said, knowing she had to respond to that.
"Don't call me California." Cali growled.
"I'm sorry, come lay with me."
"No."
"I don't offer this to many girls."
"Shut the hell up."
"At least promise you'll come to the football game tomorrow and that you'll wear my jersey."
No response.
I sighed, defeated.
A few minutes later I heard Cali's voice. "Jakey?"
"What happened to the name lover?"
"I like Jakey better."
"Okay, what did you want?"
"For you to come here?" Cali questioned herself.
I shot up out if bed and hopped over to Cali's bed.
"I'd love too," I got into bed with Cali and wrapped my arms around her.
"I love you," Cali whispered into the darkness of the hotel room.
"I love you too,"
"Night, Jakey,"
"Night, Baby,"
**
I waited at Cali's English teacher's door waiting for the class to be over so we can walk to Science together.
I told Hayden, Casey and Brooke about all that's happened to Cali and they said that they completely understand what Cali is going through.
The bell rung and Cali made her way towards me. "I don't want to go to Mr. White. His class is boring and Ryan is in it."
"Don't worry about it. If that dick tries anything I'll be there." I reassured her.
"Okay,"
We made our way to the classroom and took our seats. Cali tugged nervously at her Abercrombie & Finch crop top. Then she pulled at the holes in her pre-ripped jeans. Her feet clad in vans fidgeted nervously.
I wrapped my hand around her wrist and leaned close to her ear. "Cali don't get so nervous, nothing is going to happen."
Cali ran a hand through her wavy Carmel brown hair. "Something has to happen, I just know it."
"Nothing will happen," I spoke way to soon.
"Cali, I'm sorry about what happened last week." Ryan whispered.
Cali looked to see that Ryan was behind her looking at her longingly. I ran my hands angrily through my quiff.
"Leave her alone." I spat harshly to Ryan.
"Since when did you become her boss."
"Since you'd like to keep your face intact." Cali growled. That's hot.
"If that means just by talking to you it'd be worth a shot. So how've you been? I bet you miss me." Ryan winked.
A bitter taste filled my mouth as I shot a fatal glare at Ryan.
"Hey,Jackass mind your own damn business." I seethed.
Ryan put a hand on Cal's shoulder and smirked. " I just care how Cali's holding up."
"No you don't, so take your notes and shut the hell up." Cali sneered.
Ryan's smirk disappeared and he started to take notes.
**
I closed my locker door and headed over to Cali's locker to give her my other football jersey.
"Hey," Cali's whole face lit up.
I kissed her roughly on the lips. Cali grabbed the collar of my shirt and pulled me into her, deepening the kiss.
"Cali, Jacob, stop." I heard Hayden squeal but I ignored her and continued to kiss Cali.
"Jacob, go get ready for the game at Devenford prep." Casey whined.
Brooke made choking noises and finally Cali pulled away, looking flushed.
"Alright, here's my jersey and I'll meet you there." I kissed Cali on the cheek and went to Ryder's locker so we could walk to the football teams bus.
"Ready for the game?" He asked as he shut his locker.
"Yes, are you ready?"
"Yep, I heard Devenford prep has a kick ass quarterback."
I nodded.
Ryder and I started to walk to the exit of the school.
The bright yellow school bus was parked at the curb with our teammates shouting profanities inside of the bus.
"Sounds like they're getting pumped."
Ryder snorted.
"Yeah, oh, and Scott brought the pickle juice for our ritual."
Every football game that we have our team has to drink one Dixie cup filled about one-fourth of the way for good luck. Usually every time we drink the pickle juice we win the game and so far we have won every game this season.
We boarded the bus and we each got our own seat. Scott handed me a Dixie cup filled with pickle juice. I nodded and drank the bitter juice.
**
After Coach's pep talk we headed out onto Devenford's football field. I tried looking for Cali in the stands but I didn't see her. My heart sunk, but I kept looking for her familiar Carmel colored hair and my football Jersey with the number 14 stitched on to and McCall stitched on the back. I spotted Cali with Hayden, Casey and Brooke. I caught Cali's eye and she gave me a reassuring smile. I smiled back at her and winked.
"Ready?" Ryder grinned at me as we jogged to the bleachers.
I put my helmet on and replied. "Yeah, I'm ready to kick some serious Devenford prep ass."
Ryder gave me a fist bump and we set our waters on the bleachers.
Ryan walked up to us and grinned, acting as if he was never a dick to Cali. "Ready, guys?"
Ryder and I simultaneously said yes blandly.
The buzzer rung and Ryder and I ran out on the field with the rest of our teammates following behind.
**
The score was 13-13.
Ryan sprained his ankle and he was now sitting on the bench with and ice pack on his ankle. Baby.
Scott, Ryan's friend, was sitting on the bench with a minor concussion.
Ryder looked like he was about to rip someone's head off. Number 33 on Devenford was really pushing his buttons.
I had scored both touchdowns and Ryder had scored the penalty kick.
Coach yanked us into a huddle and gave us his little pep talk.
"Alright, we've got to beat this snobby school or else your asses will be mine tomorrow. If you win we won't have practice. So get your asses on the field and kick some ass!" Coach's face turned bright red and he motioned us to get out in the field.
33 walked over to Ryder and told him something. Ryder's face turned purple under his helmet. I jogged over to Ryder and pulled him away from 33. "Ignore him like I ignore Ryan."
Ryder growled. "I can't he's saying things about Hayden."
What?! "Hayden?"
"Yeah, Cali's best friend, he noticed I kept looking up at her and he said somethings that he shouldn't say and it doesn't sound legal." Since when did Ryder like Hayden? Cali's gonna love this. 33 walked back towards his team and the referee blew the whistle.
Devenford handed the ball off to 33 and Ryder bolted after him. I trailed behind, trying to keep Ryder from not turning into a freaking animal.
Ryder literally threw himself at 33 and smashed him into the ground and grabbed the front of his helmet and pulled towards him. "Don't. You. Ever. Talk. About. Her. Like. That." Ryder was so angry he couldn't even talk right. I pulled him off of 33.
"Your girl?"
"She'll be mine after this game is over."
Ryder shrugged.
We got back into our positions and earned a few slaps on the back from our fellow teammates.
They did the same play as last time and Ryder bolted again. I gave up on following behind and just waited because I knew what was going to happened next.
Ryder tackled 33 to the ground again and the ball bounced into the air. Cole, our lineman grabbed the ball and tucked it under his arm and stood there waiting for the red to blow the whistle. He did. Now we had possession of the ball.
We went through our play. They faked the hand off to me and gave it to Ryder who sprinted to the opposite side of the field, dodging Devenford's tackles.

50 yards left.
Cole was sprinting beside Ryder and pushing the defenders out of his way like a plow.
35 yards left.
Thirty seconds were left in the game.
20 yards left.
Col was tackled down.
10 yards.
Twenty seconds.
33 was right behind Ryder.
5 yards left.
Ten seconds.
I sprinted towards 33 and smashed him I into the turf.
Ryder scored a touchdown.
The crowd went wild.
The buzzer went off and the whistles blew. We won.
**
I unlocked the hotel door and Cali followed behind me.
"Good job tonight-Guess what? Hayden likes Ryder!"
"Thank and that's great because Ryder likes Hayden."
I sat down in the bed and Mouse greater me with a few slobbery licks.
"They should date." Cali say next to me and kissed my cheek.
"Like us," I kissed Cali softly on the lips.
Cali nodded and kissed me roughly.
Her hands found a hold on my ratty shirt and poked her finger through.
My hands ran through her silky hair Cali tugged at my bottom lip and I explored her mouth. Mouse started to bark at us.
Cali kissed me on last time and pulled away. Her breath was ragged and she looked flushed. She was beautiful.
"Mousey," Cali whined.
I laughed and wrapped me arms around her and we laid down on the bed. I turned the lamp off and we laid there in darkness.
"Goodnight, Jakey, I love you."
" Night, Baby, I love you."
Sooner of later we both fell asleep. It was the best feeling ever with Cali in my arms.
