I returned to the students' dorm after that. There was also another dormitories on the other side of the quad, closer to the commons. The dorm was painted matcha kind of green, there's a clinic for students nearby and an extensive parking lot in front of the it. The living arrangements were partly based on convenience. Being here kept us students closer to the campus. The students' dorm was built in an open way, allowing for more light. The room they'd given me was small and plain, with a bunk bed and a desk and two wardrobe. The top bunk bed was mine, Aisha said that she felt more comfortable if she was closer to the ground, which made no sense to me.
When I opened the door to my room, Aisha, who was tidying up her clothes, abruptly began putting her clothes back in the closet.
"So, how was the meeting?"
"More like a trial. I felt like a criminal most of my times there."
She hesitated for a moment. "They... they keep you here, right? You can stay?" Aisha looked worried.
I gave a harsh laugh. " Can't get rid of me that easy. They won't keep us apart, for now."
She laughed before she walked over to a small table that held a water dispenser, coffee, and other beverages. "You want some hot chocolate?" she asked.
"Sure." My parents always reminded me of how I must becareful of food or drink that was given to me by foreign people. Because I was Muslim, and I supposed to take precautions of non-Halal beverages. But with Aisha, everything felt safe. I trusted her.
"They're making me take extra practice sessions," I explained.
She didn't respond. She dumped four packets of instant hot chocolate into two cups and then added in hot water. She handed me mine, along with a wooden stirrer, and then we sat at her bed.
" I was so worried and about to rush out to the meeting. But I was afraid that-that would only make things worse. So I was trying to distract myself by-"
"By tidying up your clothes? You're such a freak." I sipped my hot chocolate
" I don't want to end up here alone, Mel. Who am I going to talk to?"
"Okay, okay, I get it. I'm just some kind of entertainment for you. " I muttered. And we both laughed. I always thought that we had some kind of a weird bond. That's why we always get along together. I only hoped that she wouldn't feel how anxious i was about what happened back there in the meeting.
When I went to bed afterward, I passed out before even hitting the pillow. I felt ten times worse when I woke up the next morning. It was still 4.30 in the morning. I stood up on shaky legs, feeling restless. Needing to walk off my weird mood, I put on a robe and slippers and left my room for the bathroom down the hall. I splashed cool water on my face and stared in the mirror. The reflection looking back at me had tangled hair and bloodshot eyes. I looked sleep-deprived. I did the ritual washing before daily prayer, it called Wudhu in Islam. Then I did my morning prayer.
Aisha still lay in her bed, while it's almost 5 in the morning. "Aisha," I said, shaking her. "Aisha, wake up."
I helped her sit up. "Aisha, It's already 5. Wake up."
After a few moments, her eyes fluttered open, and in the dim lighting, I could see a flicker of consciousness start to take over. Her frantic breathing slowed, and she leaned into me.
"Sleepyhead," I told her gently. "Trying to wake you up really is my nightmare."
Her pale, jade-green eyes watched me with concern. She stood up. "Fine. Let's see if i wake earlier tomorrow, i'm gonna throw you out of your bed" My protests came awkwardly to my lips, and she left before I could get out a sentence.
