"Alex, Alex look at me. Alex look at me. Its okay, everything is okay, I promise, just don't look at them, look at me."
"Jack-" Alex almost whispered, his throat hoarse from crying.
"Don't look at them, it's okay, everything's okay."
Jack's eyes brimmed with tears as his heart shattered with every breath Alex took. He pulled Alex into a tight hug, trying to hold onto what was left of alexs life, trying to almost force it back inside him. Trying to contain a life that hadn't yet been completely lived and a life that hadn't seen all the wonders of the universe just yet. Of course Alex was too young to die, dying at forty two was not something to be proud of. It wasnt even half of the lifetime he could have had, and that fact left alex feeling sicker than he was.
Frail fingers reached out to grab the hand of his friend sat by the edge of the bed, nobody else had decided to pay their respects, but jack did. Jack cared and he was always there for Alex, regardless. The other man laced his fingers in Alex's boney hands and rubbed the top of his hand with his thumb gently, tracing the lines of Alex's veins up his arm and then back down and then flipped his arm over and did the same on the other side, starting with his palm.
Alex closed his eyes lazily as he listened to the sound of people bustling around him, making buttons beep and machines whir. He also set his mind to the feel of jacks fingers up and down his arm. "Jack," Alex breathed. His breathing caught in his throat as the ability for his lungs to work became increasingly harder, along with the idea of coming to terms with what he was just about to tell the man at his side. "Jack, I have to tell you something."
Jack could now feel tears stinging his own eyes as he knew the moment was drawing closer and closer by the second. Both forty two in age and born on the same day, both went to the same school, practically had the same family, spent every moment together, grew up together, friends through life, but they knew there was one more thing that hadn't been addressed. And in that moment, both men wished they could go back and share the moments they never came to terms with together, much earlier on in life. "Jack, I- I-" Alex spluttered a little bit as his loss of breath continued. After a small coughing fit, he tried again. "Jack, I love you, so damn fu-cking much." He managed, but couldn't quite contain the last cough. "I want you to know that, and if you hate - me for it, there's not much I can do now. I'm dead soon." He let out an airy chuckle before coughing his lungs out again. As for Jack, he was in floods. Tears streamed down his face like Niagara falls.
"I love you too." He sobbed. "No jack, i mean, i really lo-ve you. I mean, id fu-ck you and - everything." Jack fell silent as the new information began to sink in. Jack knew he loved Alex in the same way, but knowing Alex loved him created a much bigger situation than he ever expected to deal with. He thought he'd be destined to sit watching Alex fall in love with every perfect woman forever.
"Id like to fuck you too." Clutching at the edges of the duvet slung over the frail man. Alex gasped in surprise as he looked at jack with almost loving eyes. "It's going to be okay Alex. It's going to be okay." Alex had never seen his friend so broken before now. This was something new, something different and he didn't like it. It pained him to see jack in such a state. That's when he had a bright idea. Alex wasn't a jewellery kind of guy, but he always wore a single ring, never took it off, even though it barely fit him now. He pulled the ring gently from his boney hand and passed it over to Jack who too, lovingly accepted the gift. "I'll never let it out of my sight." Jack managed a weak smile as Alex did too. Alex made a small gesture for a hug, and Jack made the attempt to not squish Alex, but still return the dose of affection that was much needed.
But Alex had come to the end of his rope. The end was so quick as a bright light filled his head. There was a cough, a small smile and what looked like the beginnings of an I love you. Jack barely had the chance to say goodbye before the continuous beep of the flatline echoed through the room and Alex's body was still. A sob rips through the air as another body collapses to the floor.

In a place called Essex, England.
There was a bright light and a severe final cry of pain before a large cheer exploded through the room. A tiny being was handed to a woman sat upright in a bed with her knees drawn up to her chest and a blanket hanging over them. She was breathing rather heavily and her body was shaking with physical exertion. "Isn't he beautiful?" The woman sighed towards a man stood next to her. The man nodded and smiled at the woman. The woman sat stroking the baby for a while as the baby sat silently in her arms, his hands up by his face and legs splayed out awkwardly. "Welcome to the world little Alex. My Alexander William Gaskarth." She bent down to kiss the baby's head and smiled at him lovingly. "Nobody is ever going to hurt you."

Mrs Gaskarth sure had her hands full with her new born son. Many sleepless nights left her groggy and exhausted as feeds were frequent and Alex always wanted more. More of what? Mrs Gaskarth would give anything to know that but for the time being, crying and wailing was all she had to deal with. The last six months had been difficult for her for sure. Dark bags had begun to circle the underneath of her eyes and her face had begun to look a little gaunt and skeletal. Her lips were bitten and raw and her hair had started to grow a little grayer than usual. She never fully realised how much a baby could suck the life out of you, and considering this was her fourth child, this child seemed to hit her harder than the rest had. But, she wouldn't give Alex up for the world. As much as she perhaps would love the peace and quiet and lack of stress, she loved him all the same.
Meanwhile, in a country surrounded by war and chaos named Lebanon, another woman, not far off the same age as Mrs Gaskarth was looking at her new born son the same way Mrs Gaskarth did the day she gave birth to her beautiful boy. Jack Barakat was the name of this particular baby boy. Jack Barakat with the extremely dark hair and a big nose, that seemed to be a bit too big for his face at the moment. His eyes were closed in peaceful sleep as Mrs Barakat felt the overwhelming joy of bearing her third child, though that joy didnt last long as she had begun to realise that such a country as lebanon would not be safe to let her child grow up, they needed a new home. And though she didnt know it yet, a beautiful American state named Maryland awaited her and the rest of her family, little Jack Barakat included. To calm her growing fear, she stroked his smooth skin and cuddled into him herself, before falling asleep from the exhaustion.
