Jack Barakat was a pretty ordinary dude. He had a basic life with basic people surrounding him. His girlfriend was basic and everything about her life was just as basic. Sex with her was basic, going on a date with her was basic. All in all, jack couldn't get away from anything basic, it followed him.
Having said that, there was an exception, Alex Gaskarth, a small man with messy brown hair and plaid shirts. He was less basic, but sometimes that scared jack. Jack liked basic, because basic was normal, and extraordinary was something to be feared in jack's life. Then again, jack liked the change in thrill at times. Alex was a good guy and jack's best friend. Despite their differences, they got along like two peas in a pod, so much in fact, that it made jack's girlfriend jealous on a regular basis. Sometimes jack enjoyed that, seeing the fury on her face.
"Jack, I've got to go shopping. You coming with?" Jack's girlfriend asked in a monotone voice as she walked stiffly to the kitchen table and grabbed her single car key with the house key attached. She didn't approve of keyrings, she thought they were a waste of time and money. Jack folded his arms and shrugged at her, giving her the basic response she wasn't looking for. "Come on jack, get off of your lazy ass and come with me." Considering the words she used contained emotion, her voice did not. She remained monotone and out of it for the rest of the conversation. Jack just stood still.
"I'll be in my room when you get back." He stated bluntly and walked off upstairs, leaving his girlfriend stood in the kitchen by herself. Not long after, he heard the door slam and figured she had finally left the house. He let out an exasperated sigh of relief and flopped down on the bed. In truth, jack was bored. He was sick of his basic life and his basic girlfriend. He didn't want to deal with it anymore. He took one look at the black digital alarm clock by his bed and watched the colon between the numbers blink for every passing second. Knowing he had nothing better to do, jack began to count.
One, two, three, four, five, six, seven...
Forty five, forty six, forty seven...
Fifty eight, fifty nine...
"Sixt-" jack began aloud, when his phone vibrated, cutting his counting short. He sighed and picked up his phone, without checking the name and sighing into the microphone after he answered. "Hello." He stated plainly, not even adding a question to the end.
"Hey Jack wassup man, how've you been? It's been a while." Jack almost smiled at the enthusiasm of the other man, but realised, he was bored, and bored people don't smile. Nor do basic people.
"Yeah alright."
"How's that girlfriend of yours? I know things were a little unsteady for a while. Are you two still going strong?" Jack found himself biting his lip at Alex's comments and smiling a little. Jack liked Alex, and Alex was beginning to ease his boredom. He loosened himself up a little and cleared his throat.
"Yo dude, can you come over?" A little more emotion was present in jack's voice and it scared him. He always acted like this with Alex, he couldn't usually keep his basic exterior. He couldn't appear monotone like his girlfriend. Alex just did that to him.
"Yeah man, what's up though, you don't sound yourself?" Jack just smiled even wider. He didn't understand why or how he was, but there was something about the concern in Alex's voice that touched jack with tender fingers.
"I just hoped to see you, it's been too long." Alex smiled behind the phone, but didn't let his excitement show.
"Do you want me over in five?" Alex offered. Jack just gave a small hum and ended the call. He sat up and stared back at the clock waiting for Alex's arrival. Jack knew Alex knew where the spare house key was, so he was just anxiously waiting the knock on his bedroom door and the small man to appear behind it. Jack was practically shaking with excitement, and that wasn't like him.
