ELEVEN
To say that Hopper was different, that was an understatement. He wasn't different. He was changed. Whatever happened to him, it must have been horrible, terrifying, or worse. He seemed distraught after being questioned by the police, and rightfully so.With Jake, he was sweet and kind. I'd wake up in the morning to find Jake on the couch, clapping and playing along with the cartoons on the TV while Hopper laughed and tickled him.
Mike, on the other hand, was apprehensive. I could tell that he was unsure whether or not to trust Hopper.
"Mike, honey, are you ok?" I asked, feeling Mike shift as he looked at me.
"There is something wrong with Hopper." He didn't even bother hiding his feelings.
"What do you mean there is something wrong? I'm sure Hopper is fine. Yeah, he might be a little...different since coming back, but that doesn't mean something is wrong." I sat beside him.
"Something feels off about Hopper, like he's not being completely truthful to us." Mike sighed.
"Mike, look at me." I smiled. He looked at me, confused.
"Hopper is different. Of course he is. He just escaped 10 years of captivity in Russia. As for the truth, I trust that Hopper told the police everything he knows. If he hadn't, the police would have called him out on it. I trust Hopper." I informed Mike.
"All I am asking is that you be careful, El. We don't know what happened to him. We don't know what the Russians did to him. We don't know if he is to be trusted. For all we know, the Russians fried his brain and he's subconciously working for them." Mike warned me.
When Mike mentioned Hopper's brain being fried, my brain immediately went to my birth mother.
She was experimented on for money. They took me when I was born and told her that I died. She didn't believe them, so he grabbed a gun and held Hawkins National Lab at gunpoint so she could find and rescue me. Before she had a chance to save me, she was found and captured, being forced to undergo electro-shock therapy. They left her in the care of my aunt Becky, her brain fried.
Mike knew about my mother and her history with Brenner, but he apparently forgot that this slightly triggered me.
"I'm sorry, El. I didn't meant it like that." Mike held me, tears welling in my eyes.
"I've already lost my mom. I don't want to lose my dad." I composed myself, keeping calm.
