"Nii san, exactly what are you trying to do?"
Gin questioned everything she knew, her mind spinning with doubt and confusion at the sight of her brother cowering behind the car.
"Shush gin, not so loud. I'm hiding from dazai san."
All questions have been answered, and gin only sighed in response, subtly shuffling a little so her body covered her brother's figure. She didn't want him to die, ok maybe sometimes she does when he steals her pudding and gets the bigger room when they stay over at chuuya's place, but not because of some reckless action he pulled on dazai, most certainly dazai would just shoot him and that's the lamest death ever. If you are to die, go down in flames, and drag your enemies down with you. Die flamboyantly with no regrets of your own will. Not because of insolence and an executive with the mind of both a genius and a spoilt 3 year old with a tendency to throw temper tantrums.
Said 3 year old genius was currently glaring at a sheet of paper, left behind by none other than their target, who wrote it with the sole purpose of attempting to provoke dazai into spontaneous combustion.
"That bitch-"
"My my, is chuuya's flowery language diffusing into you, dazai Chan?"
"Amane sensei, I will greatly appreciate your silence."
The legendary battle between one bandage obsession 3 year old and another lamp obsession 3 year old drew the attention of all in the vicinity, Chuuya and dazai's squads all sighing a collective sigh while hirotsu only took out another cigarette, whispering something along the lines of he was too old for this. The entirety of chuuya's squad all watched in interest while dazai's squad only glanced at the argument with disinterest. After all, one of them had been dealing with their leader's emotional constipation and pining for the other squad's leader, and the other was memorising the scene to perform a perfect reenactment to their leader after they got him back.
"How rude! You were the one who begged the boss for my assistance!"
"I never begged for it, I merely made a request, a couple of times."
"Really? I wonder if 23 emails and 1 face to face conversation is considered a couple-"
"Amane sensei, I hope you do your job."
Dazai replied briskly, intent on ending the conversation then and there and hoping the doctor would agree to the unspoken question.
"Do you mean my job as a doctor, or my job as the one with a powerful ability?"
Unfortunately, given the sudden drop in temperature and the feel of piercing eyes boring holes into him, it appeared that it was an immediate refusal.
"Both."
Somehow, the air turned chillier and higuchi shivered, trying to appear nonchalant as she brisk walked to where gin and Akutagawa were crouching, tachihara joining them as they distanced themselves from the battlefield of the 3 year olds.
Dazai turned back, ignoring the shiver that ran down his spine at the raw fury burning in those irises, for chuuya, he'll brave anything, even if that 'anything' referred to a creature who quite literally controlled everything. He probably won't be killed, keyword being probably.
The two squads witnessing one of the few moments in which they saw anything but a playful smile on the doctor's face all silently backed away, no one wanted to be caught in the crossfire of this battle.
"Then I sincerely apologise for not being able to carry out that order."
It was more of a hiss than a reply, but dazai wasn't going to back down so easily. Not when the ability in question was the ability to control everything in her surroundings, and that one ability could probably solve every single problem, even with all the small restrictions that prevented it from ascending to god level. If it weren't for some sort of demarcation she put on herself that she would only use it for healing.
"Even if you could save Chuuya in a second?"
"You overestimate my abilities."
"I overestimated how much you cared for others."
The captain of dazai's squad, Takano, only sighed in exasperation. Chuuya's squad captain, haru, too sighed in frustration. Both having dealt with dazai before, one a significantly larger number of times, knew that something like this would happen. Dazai had definitely not heard the saying that all the lower echelons of the port mafia would eventually learn and remember by heart: To anger the underground doctor, one must be suicidal, contain mass amounts of pain tolerance, as well as be extremely foolish and ignorant.
It appears that, dazai checked off all of them, the foolishness being his love for chuuya that clouds his rationale.
They all had experience with dazai's way of speaking, most of it stemming from the daily bicker between soukoku and the rare argument, and dazai always seemed to step over many boundaries and push many buttons when speaking to people. A prime example being the current situation.
It was clearer than crystal that dazai was using his tactics of goading Chuuya to do something for him on her, but he hadn't seemed to realise that she was more similar to him than to Chuuya. Those two were like metal, cold and sharp, to anyone that's not Chuuya anyway, while Chuuya was more like fabric, soft and warm, to anyone that's not an enemy anyway.
"My my, it's not like you're any better, dazai."
When there is no 'chan' following the name, one should run as fast and as far as possible. Dazai did the exact opposite, boldly stepping closer to the ticking time bomb as they all visibly winced with each clack of the heel against the pavement.
"To not use their power, one must be a fool."
"To threaten the one that holds the sword, they too, must be a fool."
As interesting as this show of two 3 year old demons trying to 'out fool' each other was, Chuuya was still in the hands of the third 3 year old demon and Akutagawa wondered if somehow necromancy was possible if he interfered in their argument. It wasn't like these two would be backing down anytime soon unless there was outside interference.
However, all of a sudden, a loud rumble shook the ground, a nexus of fractures erupting beneath their feet, many of them falling to the ground as the violent shaking disrupted their balance.
Akutagawa instantly steadied gin and so did higuchi, but since tachihara was single and had no family, his unfortunate life indeed, there were no distractions to stop him from noticing the minute dangerous expression crossing the doctor's face. From experience, tachihara was able to discern wariness and an undertone of anger, but there was no shock, like she had expected this to happen. Which was strange in itself, except that the more peculiar event unfolding was the sight of the so called 'indifferent and cruel' demon prodigy dazai osamu having such a myriad of expressions cross his face at once, before he spun and sprinted away, somehow maintaining balance despite the vigorous vibration of the ground. Maybe it really was true that if you run fast enough you won't lose balance, or maybe it was the fact that dazai was too gay and thus couldn't walk straight to begin with, so on such uneven trembling ground that wasn't at all flat or straight, dazai felt kinship with the ground and felt perfectly at home with it. Indeed, trembling ground reminiscent of dazai's own throbbing heart whenever he caught sight of Chuuya, and the not straight ground akin to his gayness, that was most likely the explanation. (Totally guys he's gay enough)
"Dazai san!"
Came the chorus response as the few who maintained balance tried to rush after him, all attempts stopped when a lamp came flying past the mafia members, barely missing hitting takano in the head.
"Don't go after him, you'll mess everything up."
"Amane sensei-"
This time, the target was hit, a paper ball bouncing off takano's head, to which his response was to just catch it and open it, eyes scanning it like he was totally unbothered by the miniature earthquake. The miniature earthquake that had just miraculously stopped, allowing the rest of them to get to their feet, and in the distance, tachihara swore he saw dazai trip on one of the few pieces of flat ground, thus further solidifying his theory of dazai just being that gay.
After analysing the message, which was probably what Akui left to make dazai explode in fury, takano passed it to haru, before barking out orders to his squad to fan out and patrol the area, as well as evacuate the citizens who were all spilling out into the streets curious about what had caused the sudden earthquake. Haru followed suit, Akutagawa deciding since dazai was gone now he could come out, joining in the evacuation, gin and higuchi installing their own little world and being lovebirds as usual. Tachihara only stared at Amane in suspicion, pondering exactly why she didn't seem surprised by it, but she appeared to sense his stare and turned to glare him into submission, daring him to even mention it and to get his ass moving to help the rest. Now since it appeared his life may be in her hands, tachihara made the wise decision of backing down and joining Akutagawa in his efforts, not even bothering with the two lovebirds cooing sweet words at each other. Those two won't listen to him anyway, too caught in each other's eyes to look at anything or anyone other than each other. What's with these gay people and having the power of installing bubbles and worlds around each other, tachihara was definitely not jealous because he was single, he wasn't!
