Dr. Death was propping himself up against the dumpster. "This place stinks!" He made a sour face then let out a violent cough.
"Why am I here?" I asked, confused.
"I brought you back."
I looked around. What did he mean? I began to walk toward the not so busy road by the alleyway. My eyes widened. There's something magically disturbing about looking right at the place where you died. The morbidity of the situation added on to the magical feel I acquired. This restaurant was familiar in more ways than one and my hate grew.

HELENA'S POV
Love can grow from hate. That is one thing I have learned over 24 years. The simple existence of hate is strong enough to make you love, and vice versa. I was the president of hate. Rehab uncovered my misery and extinguished a few demons... All but one.
Did I ever stop hating? Adam and I had a love that budded from hate. He hated all that I dispised with every ounce of his being. I was infested. Our mutual disgust was the only thing that made me better. I needed him to hate so I could love again. Was it love at first site? Of course not. Our fairytale wasn't really, well, a fairytale at all and I'm not going to pretend it was. I'm not a dream girl. We didn't meet eyes and fall like meteor showers for one another. My heart longs for a day that that could be true between us. We aren't magical but we are pretty damn good.
I miss him... More than I did yesterday.

ADAM'S POV
Dr. Death promised to keep close and check in on me periodically. I looked down at my finger tips and the dirt that was pushed under my finger nails. Louisiana just got a whole lot more dangerous and I was the reason.
I obviously could not retreat to my old place of living now that I'm considered dead. I still don't know how I took this all in. How did I find out that I died and not faint? How did I not scream and cry? I was close though.
"How much time do I have?" I asked looking at the various pins hanging onto dear life on Death's loose fitting vest. He had a blank dog tag around his neck and hands in his black pants pockets.
"Two months" He said in a raspy mono-tone voice. He seemed ill.
"How many men?-" I asked.
"And women." He corrected.
"-and women..."
"one thousand"
My eyes widened and my mouth gaped at the answer I was definitely not looking for.
"Only two!?"
"Heh, kid umm... I'm, uh, running a tight schedule." He answered, brows raised as his forehead glistened from the sweat caused by the humid weather.
I'm not even sure if this is possible. I need to back out now. "No." I said in a serious tone.
"No!?"
"HELL no. I can't believe I even tried to agree with this. Everything is fuzzy. I don't know what I was thinking."
"Hey hey hey!" He grabbed my shoulders and stared into my eyes, grinning widely. I looked away uncomfortably as I tried to shake him off. His grip tightened. "This isn't so bad! I've seen more killed within the span of a few days! And I did it all by myself!"
"Wait, what?"
"Just trust me."
"Why do you need that many souls? Especially in the span of two months? Isn't that a little bit... much?"
"I'm fighting for your freedom, Adam. It's really not that hard. I can take you to a prison, a neighborhood, anywhere you'd like! I'm going to be collecting with you. You don't have to decide right now since you seem so fickle about it. However, the time limit still stands so don't take too long. If you say no, you'll be ghosted and I can't say you will ever see your girlfriend again. That's just how it works. I can't keep you like this forever. However, if you complete the task with me before the time runs out, I'll save both of you. When you decide, let me know." He smiled, but this time it seemed genuine. "Helena is only a massacre away." He said, chuckling.
I smirked a little at the phrase "A massacre away."
Could I really do this? I would only be exterminating bad people. It's for Helena. She's worth it. Besides, what choice do I have? I don't know..."We're gonna play ring around the ambulance like we never gave a care" He stood up tall, straightening his spine and fanning his bearded, drooping face with his hand. "Let's get out of this literal dump"
