Freedom.

The free will to do, think, and have whatever you want. But, that isn't what fate had in store for you... not in the slightest. You resent the upbringing you had; from the time you were born to age 10, you wished for nothing more than to forget what happened to you... to be free of the shame inherited from your family name. You replaced those horrid memories by following a simple plan: do what it takes to get off this hellhole of an island.

Before you turned the age of 13, you were taught the ways of the Church of the Walls and of humanity's greatest threat: the titans. The thought of giant man-like beings eating people never really bothered you... it's not like anyone really cared about you, so why should you care about humanity? Once you did turn 13, you were sent to private training to become a part of the Military Police Regiment, where you would serve the crown and keep the peace within the walls.

You were a natural born soldier. Ranking at the top of your class in academics and in battle. When you were 17, you were asked by the king's cabinet to join what they called the 'interior police'. It was not made known to the public that it exists, and you were introduced to a group of other elite soldiers. The leader, or 'Captain', of this group was rumored to be the serial killer who killed over 100 MP's in under a decade. His name was Kenny, but he infamously went by Kenny the Ripper. He took a special interest in you, saying he saw a little bit of himself and someone else he once knew. You excelled in training, mastering any weapon type and even accomplishing your graduation. By killing your first target. It was a tragic story of a young couple, their deaths leaving their poor son in the hands of his estranged grandfather. And in just two years, you rose through the ranks, and thanks to your mentor, you were the most deadly weapon the interior had at the age of 19.

One day, after a long day of training, Kenny was walking the halls when he overheard a conversation between Pastor Nick and another member of the king's cabinet.

"Y/n has become quite the useful tool, wouldn't you agree?

"Yes. She's become a fine assassin. It's hard to believe that she's a bastard child of Lord Reiss. Given that the royal family is known for being pacifists, she is a ruthless killer who will not hesitate."

"Aces... does she know of her heritage?"

"Yes... and despises it so much she devoted her life to serving the crown. She doesn't want the title of queen; she only wants freedom. She knows the truth behind the walls, but kept our secret in exchange for a small demand: to one day leave Paradise."

"So... it is time to assign the special task?"

"I believe so. That damn Scout Regiment is looking for answers. They need to be dealt with... for the safety of the walls and humanity's survival. The time has come to kill them off... from the inside."

"So it's decided. We will finally be able to get rid of the Survey Corps. Who is qualified to be assigned such a dastardly ploy?"

"One who is second only to Kenny the Ripper himself: Y/n L/n."

"What does Rod know of this? "

"He doesn't, and will never have to. They've never met, so he has no reason to care. What does matter is that she will not fail."

"What makes you so sure?"

"We offer her something she won't refuse. And when it's completed... we dispose of her."

"How do you figure she won't betray us?"

"Trust me, with the right motivation, Y/n L/n will do whatever is asked of her without so much as a second thought... With the promise of 'freedom' "

"Alright, maggots! Get the hell outta here! But, Y/n, the council would like a word with you." Kenny shouted as the Anti-Personnel Squad dispersed into the halls. You looked back at the man who gestured to follow him. Your (h/c) hair framed your face, and your (e/c) eyes stared so fiercely into anyone who dared to meet your gaze.

You nodded and followed him up the staircase, looking at the walls surrounding them. They were covered in paintings of the past rulers of Paradis. It made you sick... This island is a prison... It was just your luck that you were a descendant of the devil itself. A bastard child, cast out by her own people and raised to be the island's top trained assassin. It's not like you had a choice... it was either submit and obey orders, or die.

Kenny stopped in front of a door and knocked twice before shoving it open. You followed behind and saluted the men sitting before you. The men who ran the kingdom secretly in the shadows...

"At ease. That will be all, Kenny."

"Heh. no problem, Pastor." Kenny responded with a tip of his hat. He shut the door behind him and you gulped as you tried to keep your composure.

"For the record, please state your name and rank."

"My name is Y/n L/n, of the interior police."

"State your objective."

"To serve and protect the crown and the people of the walls. How may I serve?"

"We've an assignment for you to complete... a special task. It is dangerous, but I have full faith in your abilities that you will succeed."

Your hands clenched. "And that is, sir?" you asked, biting your cheek to keep yourself from reacting too hopeful.

"You are to join the Survey Corps, find out just how much they know of the walls and what's beyond them, and kill a very important target"

An assassination?... they must be desperate...

"Yes sir... who is the target?" you asked.

"Captain Levi of the scout regiment; Humanity's strongest soldier."

You blinked at the man's words. Someone in the scouts? The longest anyone has lived in that regiment couldn't be longer than 2 years... how could he possibly be a threat?

"Tch... if he's the strongest, why am I being asked to kill him. Sounds to me Paradis could use him."

"Because we believe you are the only one who can, and his usefulness has been proven... unsatisfactory."

In other words... They simply want him dead because he's trying to find the truth... and they can't do it themselves.

"And, hypothetically, if I fail this assignment?"

"You won't, young Y/n." his voice condescending into a threat.

I don't doubt myself... but why does this sound like a suicide mission?...

"And, if I should choose... to refuse?"

The man's face twitched slightly. "Then... how can you accept your reward?"

"R-reward, sir?..." you asked in disbelief. No assignment was ever given any type of reward.

"Your freedom, Y/n. Freedom from your lineage... and the island."

Your eyes widened. Freedom... the land beyond the walls... beyond this island... away from my so-called 'family'...  You raised your head and met the gaze of the men in front of you, eyes full of determination.

"So Miss L/n, what say you?"

"Consider this 'Captain Levi'... as good as dead..."
