Chapter 34 - What the Future Holds

The rain was coming down hard as you were about a quarter of the way back to the walls. Suddenly, you saw a group of soldiers on horseback racing towards you. You slow down to see Hange, along with Floch and a few other scout members.

"Hange? What are you doing out here? I was on my way back-"

"Y/n?! What are you doing?!? Where's Levi?? And the rest of your group!??" Hange asks frantically. It took you a moment to realize they were handcuffed, and the rest of the men surrounding them were armed.

"He's back at camp... Hange, what is going on-" you start, but you're shortly interrupted as a blast erupts in the distance, making you turn back and see it was not far from you.

"Zeke! Everyone, move out!" Floch yells, snapping his horses' reins and everyone following suit.

One soldier draws his gun at you, making you put your hands up. "You're coming with us now! Turn around!" he orders. You turn your horse around and ride just a few feet infront of him, wondering what the fuck was happening now...

You follow the river to the remainder of the group, and see them surrounding a broken wagon, with a seemingly dead titan a small distance away, and Hange staring at the ground in disbelief. You dismount your horse and walk towards Hange, a soldier taking aim at you as you get close.

"Y/n!! Don't come any closer... please..." Hange begs, their hands shaking.

"Why?? What in the hell is going on?!" you shout, shoving past the soldier, and your eyes widen horror as you look at what's before you.

Levi was badly wounded across his face, with pieces of wood splintered in his eye and cheek, and two of his fingers missing from his right hand. You hold your hand up to your mouth and shudder, falling to your knees. You wail and tears start streaming down your face, mixing with the falling rain. Hange rushes to you and takes you in their arms, trying to pull you away from his beaten body.

"LEVI!!!! NO, GODS, NO!!! LEVI!!!!" you scream, your heart aching like never before. You pry yourself off of Hange and cling to his limp body, his eyes slightly open and his mouth agape. You cry as you shakily stroke his hair and face, not seeing any life in his eyes. "YOU BASTARDS!!! YOU FUCKERS KILLED HIM!!! DAMN YOU ALL TO FUCKING HELL!!!!" you shout, your voice becoming hoarse.

"Get off of him, we need to check his pulse." Floch says apathetically. Hange steps in front of him, blocking his path.

"Are you that heartless?? She's his wife! Not to mention his pregnant wife. This is a very stressful situation as it is, and if you had any sense, you'd know she's Queen Historia's beloved sister! Meaning not only is she part of the royal family, that child inside of her is of royal blood! So if it's all the same, I'll check for a damn pulse, and just stay the hell back!" they shout. Floch signals for his men to back away, and Hange kneels beside Levi and presses their ear to his chest.

"Floch!! The titan!!" a soldier yells.

Floch and the other men surround the titan, which was sucking in steam and quickly deteriorating into nothing but bone. As the steam settles, Zeke flails out of the skeleton, naked, and stands up slowly as everyone watches in shock. He doesn't speak, but his expression looked truly distraught.

"He's alive. Hold him as tight as you can and jump into the river" Hange whispers to you as everyone is distracted. You nod once and hold Levi tight, lunging him and yourself into the rushing river.

You can hear shouts from above the water's surface, and gunshots as they try to trail you from the ground. You hold Levi to your chest and Hange holds your arm, letting the river flow you all down the current.
