Xie Lian held his breath for a moment that felt like an eternity. He was standing desperately too close to Hua Cheng, their chests touching, and he slowly looked up. Hua Cheng stared back from where he was leaning against the wall, his brows arching up and flashing a surprised smile. That smile.
The first distraction had happened a bit before and led teacher and assistant to find themselves in a rather uncommon position. Caught in the rare and bright shine of that smile, Xie Lian became certain something was happening. No smile had ever stirred such a visceral reaction in him before, surely not his girlfriend's, and it acted as the second distraction. Could it also have been the trigger for their relationship to change? Turned out, he would still figure this out.
The children were too busy laughing at his first tripping to notice what really happened, or so Xie Lian thought. Right now, standing so close to each other, Xie Lian just became terribly embarrassed, which also meant clumsier, and stepped on another toy left unattended. His hand clutched at whatever piece of fabric in Hua Cheng's clothes he found, an attempt to prevent himself from falling on top of the small tables. The problem was, his hand ended up holding the man's groin.
Hua Cheng recoiled in pain and Xie Lian landed crookedly on a chair's backrest.
Watching the scene, kid Jun Wu was not laughing, but Qi Rong was a small devil and threw himself on the floor in a burst of screaming and guffawing, exaggerated as always. Even shy ones Banyue and Pei Su smiled at the situation involving the two teachers. Ling Wen lowered her tiny glasses and rose her eyes from her book as Xuan Ji and Jiang Lan screamed for her to look up.
It seemed that the whole scene started with Feng Xin and Mu Qing throwing punches at each other, which was not a rare sight for these two children. However, the real culprit could be said to be Yin Yu. He was mocking little Quan Yizhen for deciding to roll around the walls of the room. That could be a bit weird, but not really when it came to Quan Yizhen.
As Xie Lian tried to move, he felt a stinging pain. He Xuan was told to grab a glass of water for the teacher by Shi Qingxuan, the class representative, always attentive and caring. Yushi Huang did not let go of her plushie when she came to help Xie Lian stand, but Lang Qianqiu quickly grabbed his plastic sword and went smash Hua Cheng's leg, since he thought a fight was going on - and damn, that kid loved fighting.
This was a quick portrait of the single class of 5-year-olds in the Yan Yu Kindergarten, the only pre-school located at that distant part of the city.
Hua Cheng managed to straighten up, took the sword away from Lang Qianqiu and lifted the child by the back of his collar, so he would stop moving. He turned to Xie Lian and asked, "Gege, are you okay?"
Xie Lian's cheeks were burning, he was even more embarrassed now and couldn't even look Hua Cheng in the eye. He touched his own back and tried to stretch, but flinched in pain. "Ouch, not so much. I fell with the back of my ribcage on the chair."
Hua Cheng put the plastic sword on top of a cabinet and placed the child back on the floor. Lang Qianqiu just stared at the sword, far away from his reach, and creased his brows, annoyed. In the next second, he was already fiddling with the Lego construction work Feng Xin and Mu Qing were playing. The assistant got the glass of water He Xuan brought and handed it to Xie Lian. "Gege, you should go to the hospital. The class is almost at the end, I can stay with them."
"No, no, don't worry," was what Xie Lian started saying, but he then realized something. His long-date girlfriend had been acting distant and cold for a while, and he was considering surprising her that day by showing up earlier. They needed to spend more time together and chat, Xie Lian was trying to fix whatever was going on. There were also those weird sensations when the assistant teacher was close to him, but he wasn't going to tell her about that. This was something he still did not understand and was just choosing to ignore for now. All in all, they could use some talking and healing together, all would be fine. The teacher replied, "actually, fine. I'll take my leave then. Thanks for doing this, San Lang. Oh, and I'm so sorry."
Little did Xie Lian know, that day would actually mean a big turn of events in his life.
