The battle

"Qianqiu, no swords at the table. Finish eating first."

Lang Qianqiu had taken his plastic sword and was pretending to sharpen the blade using a crayon. He ripped crayon flakes in the process and got the table dirty. As Hua Cheng talked to him, he stood up and replied, "but what if there's a battle coming and I, I need to..."

Xie Lian intervened, "Qianqiu, later. Now let's eat calmly or you'll get a stomachache." The teacher went to the front of the room carrying a pile of papers.

"I hate school food," Jun Wu complained lowly, some tables away. He was looking from his metal tray to the lunch boxes the other children brought. They had handmade sandwiches, chopped fruits, sometimes a piece of cake, pudding, jelly, yogurt and... What was that? "Octopus sausage," he muttered, watching Quan Yizhen starting his lunch.

Jun Wu never had someone to cut and boil the sausages in a way they end up shaped like an octopus. That sucked. Lately, all he had at home was leftover screams and angry looks. He stared at his food again and poked Qi Rong, who also had the same school food. "Isn't it disgusting?" He said, watching Quan Yizhen.

Qi Rong thought Jun Wu meant their colleague. He already had his mouth full and was entertained pressing his bread with water and making a shapeless dough. "Yeah, he's always pelicuar."

Jun Wu raised his brows. "You mean peculiar, idiot. And no, that's those two there."

"Your eyes seem better now, Gege."

"The ice trick really saved me. Very clever."

Jun Wu watched the way Hua Cheng looked at Xie Lian and frowned. The kid was very young, but multiple experiences in his life, unpleasant experiences, made him lose some innocence already and grow malice instead. He heard Hua Cheng mentioning staying over... two men? His dad didn't like that.

Well, his dad didn't like many things. That was when Jun Wu's gears started turning. He was up to something like yesterday, when teacher Xie fell. "Qi Rong, it's time for fun."

Qi Rong raised his head like a dog with his ears up, listening.

"Remember how yesterday I told you to challenge Quan Yizhen to roll over the walls?" Jun Wu continued. Quan Yizhen also heard it and stopped eating. "Today I dare you to splash this mess you did over there on his forehead."

Quan Yizhen shrank. Qi Rong started adding more water to the mixture to make it more liquid. Jun Wu could feel the excitement growing but told Qi Rong to wait until assistant Hua looked away.

Pei Su and Banyue were both eating their little sandwiches, fruits, and yogurt while watching Lang Qianqiu. Banyue innocently stretched her little arm to get a piece of crayon that fell inside Qianqiu's lunch box, but her action didn't quite go as planned.

"The enemy started an attack!" Lang Qianqiu screamed, thinking that Banyue was trying to steal his food, and used his plastic sword to hit her hand.

Banyue recoiled with a pained look and both Pei Su and Xie Lian stood up.

"Lang Qianqiu, this is not cool! Please apologize now," Xie Lian said from his table. As soon as the kid did it, the teacher sat back down and continued talking to Hua Cheng, preparing the next activities, and having a bite whenever he managed. In between it all it was only natural he didn't notice his cellphone ringing, even if multiple, insistent times.

It was when Xie Lian took the last bite from his lunch that Qi Rong decided that was the timing to throw the dough at Quan Yizhen's direction. His target had actually been ready and observant, so he ducked down. The dough hit Pei Su instead and caused Lang Qianqiu to laugh out loud, at least before he got something sticky on his face too.
