"Ugh! I am so embarrassed!" I cried as I flopped down on the duvet. We were sitting in Lily's room after the talent scouting.
"You're embarrassed?" Rain asked. "How do you think I feel? At least you have the excuse of being a girl," He rolled his eyes, earning a pillow to his head, courtesy of me.
"Shut up both of you," Lily said, throwing a pillow at me. "Stop being little whiney walruses,"
"Walruses?" both Rain and I repeated, looking at Lily as if she was crazy.
"It was the first thing that came into my head!" Lily defended. "Don't judge!"
"Okay. But seriously, that was the worst," Rain said.
"How do you think David is going to find out what our specialities are?" I asked. "If they exist I mean," I added hastily.
"Oh! He's gonna do a bunch of tests! Apparently there's something in our genes that makes us react and special up when we drink some sort of chemical."
"How do you know all that?" Rain asked, flabbergasted. "I've been here longer than you. How come David didn't tell me all this?"
"D didn't tell me. Simon did." Lily replied.
"Who's Simon?" I asked.
"Oh, just a guy in one of the older stages of the Specialists. No one in particular. He knows because he was a late bloomer too. Turns out, after a week of tests, he got so pissed off at David that he toasted his butt using laser eyes."
"Ooh, laser eyes! wow," I said. "Did he say what sort of tests?"
"No. I only spoke to him once or twice cuz there was no one to talk to." Lily replied.
"Who's Simon?" Rain said looking outraged. I giggled. His face was so pissed off that it was hilarious! "What's so funny?" He asked.
"You," I giggled. "If I didn't know better, I'd say someone was jealous!"
"What? Why would I be jealous?" He practically shouted.
"Cuz you like Lily," I replied with a mocking grin on my face.
"What? Why would I like Lily?" he asked.
"Gee, thanks," Lily said. Glancing in her direction, I could see that both of them were totally blushing. They so liked each other. Even if they didn't want to admit it.
"No offense," Rain said. "Anyways, I'm hungry. I'm just gonna go over to the kitchen to grab a sandwich."
"You're changing the subject," I accused.
"No seriously. I'm starving," As if to prove it, his stomach grumbled. "See? Cya later Zelinagator, Lilypad!" Rain said, saluting as he got up and left the room.
"What the hell was that?!" Lily asked after the door closed, horrified.
"What?" I said confused.
"All that!" Lily said.
"You know what? I think I'm kinda peckish too. I'm gonna go grab a snack,"
"You're changing the subject,"
"You're quoting me. That's my line,"
"You're still changing the subject."
Seeing as I would get no where like this, I yelled, "Ooh! Look! There's a butterfly!"
"Where?!" Lily's face lit up. Taking the distraction, I ran out of the room, leaving behind yells of "Butterfly? What butterfly? I see no butterfly!"
After turning the corner, I slowed down to the walk, and smiled as I thought about what I was like at this time last month. It was the 22nd of April. Just a month ago, on this very day, I was at training boot camp. That was where I had learned to hack. To be honest, life with the Specialists wasn't much different, but I felt that I was like a whole new person, with a new personality, way of thinking, and for once, I was truly happy. Shaking myself back to realty, I realized that I had just missed the door to the kitchen. I turned around, and just as I was about to open the door, someone opened the door from the inside.
"Ah!" I tripped, landing on the floor. Getting to my feet and dusting invisible dust off my clothes, I found myself face to face with Rain.
"What are you doing here?" I asked.
"Getting a snack. I told you," He replied, showing me the sandwich in his hand for proof. "Were you following me?"
"No, I was just about to get a snack too," I feebly replied.
"Okay, I'm gonna go to my room now. See you later."
"Okay. See you!"
As Rain walked out, I turned, and was about to walk in when I came face to face with another person. This time it was a girl.
"Ah!" I yelled. "People have got to stop scaring me like this!"
"You're a first year, aren't you?" the girl said. She had mousy brown hair, and huge eyes that were lined in black.
'Uh, y-yes," I stuttered.
"My name is Sarah," she said, sticking out her hand. "I'm a mind reader."
"Zelina," I replied. "I don't know my specialty."
"Aww, don't worry, you'll find out soon. Nice meeting you, but I got to go now. See you 'round!"
"Okay, bye!"
I walked past her, preparing myself for another person to be there to surprise me, but thankfully no one was there. I grabbed the first sandwich I saw, and strutted out, back to my room.
In the corridor, Sarah was waving.
Waving back, I turned and headed towards my room, trying to not act bewildered. What was this strange place? It's true I am happy here, and I have sort of accepted the super powers part. Well sort of.
At this point, I felt alone. What if the specialists did make a mistake? I didn't belong here among these people- if that's what they really were- who could mind read, duplicate themselves, have supersonic hearing, laser eyes, and who knows what other strange things they could do? That's when I made my decision.
I was going to escape.
