Chapter Two

Once Harvey and my other three appointments have all but left my building, I sit back in my red leather reclining chair with a sigh at today's events.

I still need to get groceries before going home. I'm down to my last three packs of instant noodles.

I stand and stretch, smothering the wrinkles from my suit. As I grab my handbag and sweater once more, I eye the coffee stains, I decided to just carry it.

Let's get this show on the road.

Leaving the building, I give a quick farewell to Gabe, whom only had time to give me a short wave as he was on the phone.

Exiting into my car, I quickly put it into reverse and drove off to the nearest grocery store, putting it into park. Stepping out of the car, seeing the sun attempt to peak through the multitude of clouds fighting against it, I walked into the store. Grabbing a cart, I pulled out my notepad, filled with food items I required along with a blue pen.

Eggs
Milk
Bread
Squash
Coconut
Beverages

The list went on, and I stepped to the produce section, as it was closest to me. Grabbing bananas and coconut, I placed them in my cart. As I walked through the store, I had at one point felt an odd sensation...

As if being watched.

I looked around, as if looking for a bag of potatoes, when in reality I wanted to see if anyone was keeping an eye on me. Women with children passed by, elderly men trotted with their wives, and teenagers on their phones walked casually past me. I didn't see anyone specifically staring me down though the feeling never subsided.

Shrugging it off, I continued to stroll down the aisles. Grabbing bread and milk, soda pop and a few candy bars for my late night sweet tooth.

I turned the corner just in time to just barely miss crashing into two young men.

"Watch it hag. Maybe if you actually opened your eyes, you'd be able to see right in front of you."

With a roll of my eyes, I went past them, the incessant sensation still in place, even more so. Knowing my instinct is never off, I kept my eyes out for anyone looking for more than one or two seconds. But in the meantime I needed to get my shopping done.

Next aisle I went to, I picked up a few cans of tuna and a 10 pound bag of dog food, for Cynthia and Zeus. They were always fussing over food, just like me.

By now having half my cart filled, I walked past the makeup department,  my eyes catching onto the different items. I stopped to look into a mirror, making sure none of my sandwich was in my teeth for viewing when I could have sworn I saw a familiar pair of blue eyes staring at my back through the mirror.

Turning around, I saw while it was a blue eyed gaze, it wasn't who I thought.

"Sorry miss. I'm just trying to get to the lipstick." A pretty lady smiled at me, her blue eyes hidden by large glasses. That's when I realized I was blocking the aisle.

"Oh I'm so sorry. Let me get out of the way."

"Thanks miss!" The woman scooted past me into the aisle.

I'm definitely seeing things and that means its time for today to be over. Time to check out.

Going to self checkout, I placed item after item on the conveyor belt, watching them go down to the register. The light above me flickered briefly, making me think they needed a new bulb or maybe just to tighten a screw.
