Nico
I'd finally gotten my dad to leave when my phone started ringing. I was frustrated and wanted to throw it at the wall, but then I saw Cami's name.
"Cami?" I asked when I picked up.
I heard sobbing on the other end and a loud wail, like a siren.
"It's Rachel. Please, you have to come."
"What happened?" I asked.
"I found her unconscious in the bathroom with a bottle of pills," Rachel sobbed.
"Is she alive?" I asked in utter panic.
"Barely," was Rachel's response.
"Where are you?"
"In the ambulance on the way to the hospital."
"I'll meet you there."
I hung up the phone and flew down the stairs to my car. My heart was racing as utter panic set in and all I wanted to do was get to Cami, but I made myself drive the speed limit.
The twenty minute drive to the hospital took eternities in my mind and by the time I finally pulled up, I was a wreck. I rushed in and immediately found Rachel crying in the waiting room.
"Is she ok?" I asked.
"I don't know," she sobbed. "No one's said anything yet."
I paced back and forth and ran my hands through my hair. Please be ok Cami. You have to be ok.
"This is all my fault."
I was brought back by Rachel's words and turned to her.
"What do you mean?"
"I've been such an awful sister. Blamed her for something that was never her fault all so I could feel less guilty. I should have been there for her."
"Don't go there. It won't help anything. Let's just pray to whoever's listening that she's alright."
I kept pacing, pausing every ten minutes to ask a nurse if there were any updates. Every time they told me the doctor would find us when there was news. But no doctor came.
I tried to stay calm, but I couldn't until I knew if Cami was ok, if she was alive. Why didn't she call me? I would've been there in seconds. She had to be ok. I couldn't live in a world without her. I needed her to be ok.
I was on my third cup of hospital coffee when a doctor finally came up to me and Rachel.
"You're Camille's family?" he asked.
"Yes," Rachel answered.
"Is she ok?" I asked.
"She's alive," the doctor said and I let out a breath I didn't know I'd been holding. "It was a little touch and go there for a minute, but she's stable."
"Can we see her?" Rachel asked and the doctor nodded. He led us through the emergency room and up into the hospital where the admitted patients were kept. The elevator ride took hours and the walk down the hall was in slow motion. When the doctor finally stopped in front of a door, I let out a sigh of relief.
"She's not awake yet, but she should be within the next couple of hours."
Rachel grabbed my hand and we walked into Cami's hospital room together. I nearly collapsed down sobbing when I heard the steady beat of the heart monitor.
Cami was lying on the bed unconscious. Her skin was pale and her usually shiny hair was dull and flat. I was just glad she was alive.
I took a seat next to the bed, but Rachel remained standing.
"I shouldn't be here when she wakes up," she said.
"Rachel," I began, but she cut me off.
"No. It should be her choice whether or not she wants to see me. Just please tell her that I love her and I'd really like to talk to her when she's ready."
"I will."
"I'll be in the waiting room."
Rachel left and I was left alone with Cami. I gripped her hand in mine and thanked the heavens that she was still here.
"I love you Cami. Come back to me," I whispered into her ear. I kissed her forehead gently, before sitting back down in my chair.
