( EIGHTEEN; CHOKE )

Faye Hastings wasn't the type of person who believed in miracles—maybe that was why she couldn't share the same excitement as her mother. The woman bounced around the room with a grin on her face and tears brimming in her eyes.
The morning had started off calm—the two redheads going about their normal routines. Nothing out of the ordinary. The women sat at the dining room table, coffee cups sitting before them with lipstick stains along the side. They silently and comfortably sat together, the teenager texting her friend about his upcoming audition while her mother flipped through the morning mail.
After throwing the junk mail and coupons aside, the mother was left with two envelopes. The first was addressed to her, another bill that she had expected—however, the other envelope was so unexpected that she couldn't help but let out a gasp.
Faye quickly looked up from her phone, pausing mid-text to see her mom staring at her with anticipation. Raising an eyebrow, the older woman flipped the letter around to show it was addressed to her daughter. The corner of the envelope was stamped with blue ink to form a beautifully placed NYU.
The teenager didn't have a reaction as visible or audible as her mother—however, her heart had jumped into her throat, keeping her from making any noise. Faye reached forward and grabbed the letter from her mother, gently playing with the corners nervously. She examined it first, wondering if she was awaiting the doom of another rejection.
She wanted this. She needed this. And here it was—she just didn't want to open it.
The last few weeks consisted of the redhead and Quinn running around the school to request recommendation letters and calling admissions for further updates. Sabrina had taken on the job of scanning through the mailbox daily to see if the letter had come. The three had been working in overdrive to get the answer to Faye's future—now it was here.
And although the girls had worked hard, Faye could feel that it still wasn't enough. She felt as if these last attempts to prove that she was NYU worthy wouldn't help, she was too late. She knew deep within that the letter would break her heart—seal her future as doomed, but she knew she couldn't hide from it.
With shaky hands and her mother's burning gaze over her shoulder—the redhead opened the letter with a deep breath. All it took was the first word for Sabrina Hastings to break out into a fit of cheers. The woman threw her hands up in the air and silently thanked God for answering her prayers. Though, Faye remained silent as she reread the letter again and again.
