The three stood in front of their brand new home. It looked very similar to their old one. But it felt..unfamiliar.
"I know what you're thinking. We'll make a home out of it, even if we like it or not." Esther sighed and grabbed one of Ava's hands. Alice did the same with the other one and said:
"Nothing's ever easy, is it?"
"No, Alice. Now come along, we have a lot to do and we are short on time. If you still want to go on with your little plan, we have to rush a little. Come on, Ava."
The Kellers climbed the stairs and opened the doors. The furniture was already there, white sheets over pretty much everything.
"Your rooms are upstairs. Decide who stays where and start unpacking. Call me if you need anything. Now up you go."
Alice and Ava, still holding hands, made their way upstairs and walked together in both rooms. They were different than their old ones. Bigger maybe, or it simply looked like it because they were empty, their furniture under white sheets.
"Do you like any of them better? It's your call, I'll get the other one." Alice smiled and squeezed her sister's hand.
"I like this one. The walls are pretty. They have flowers, see?" Ava spoke and let go of her hand as she ran to her new room and jumped excited. "Do you like the other one? If you don't, I guess I would agree to switch from time to time." She laughed and ran back to Alice, hugging her tight.
"Oh no, no, it's alright. I like the other one just fine. I like the stripes on the walls" She smiled, hugging Ava back. "How do you feel about unpacking together? We might finish faster. We could do your room first, and then mine. Then we could go outside and look around."
"Okay! Come on, Ali."
After finishing their rooms, it felt more like home. Perhaps it wasn't as bad as they believed.
Hand in hand, Alice and Ava came downstairs to find their mother at the table, deep in thoughts.
"We finished, mother. Everything it's unpacked, where it belongs. Can we go outside to see around the place? I promised Ava I would play with her." Alice said. Next to her stood a small, too energetic girl with a bigger smile than the world has ever seen. She was holding a small bunny plush.
"Yes, but be home for dinner. And be careful. Last thing I need right now is my daughters missing." Esther said and stood up.
The girls didn't need to hear anything else. They quickly dressed up and hurried outside. Holding hands, they walked the path, watching the other houses. It was a small community. It would explain why everyone was looking at them. The wind was blowing, leaves flying around. Seeing how Ava was looking around smiling, Alice took her bunny toy from her hand. She started running around, laughing, like a normal five year-old. Ava was following a specific leaf. A beautifully colored one. She jumped up in the sky and caught it. The smiling girl came back with it and happily showed it to her sister.
"Look what I found! Isn't it pretty?" Ava said, shoving her discovery into her sister's face.
"It is, just like you." Alice smiled and took her hand. They continued their walk when they spotted two girls about Alice's age, talking and laughing. One of them was wearing a beautiful blue dress and had long, raven hair. The girl next to her had a breath-taking red hair. She kept it braided in two. The red headed was wearing a brown dress, much simpler than her friend's. The two seemed opposites and yet they seemed so happy together. At some point, when they got a little closer, they stopped talking and the raven haired one whisper to the red head. It was obvious they were talking about us. I guess that in a community of this size, we were the talk of the town. When were almost passing each other, the red head stopped in front of us and started introducing herself and her friend.
"Oh, hello! Are you from the family that just moved here?" Not really giving Alice time to answer, she started again. "I moved here not so long ago either! It's such a delight to meet you! My name is Anne and this is my best friend, Diana. I just know that the three of us will be the best of friends! What is your name?"
Alice's eyes widened at the speed the girl, Anne, was talking. Her friend, Diana, smiled and gave her a small hand wave. Realizing she was still the middle of conversation, she spoke:
"My name is Alice. And this little one here is my sister, Ava. We are new here, yes. Me and my family arrived today. Me and Ava were just looking around." The girl was hiding behind her, keeping her bunny close.
Anne bent down to talk with Ava. She was still holding on for dear life to her bunny and that leaf."I'm Anne. What do you have there?"
"Bunny and Leaf." Ava said as she showed the girl her things. "I found Leaf today. He was trying to run away but I caught him. And this is my bunny. My sister gave it to me when I turned five."
The four started walking. They laughed and talked some more. The three girls formed a bond instantly. Suddenly, it started getting dark and they had to go to their homes. With a promise of seeing each other the next day, they parted ways.
