Days went by and the three girls' friendship only grew. They met almost every day to spend time together. Soon, Anne and Alice had to go to school. Since they were new, they would be surrounded by new people they haven't met. At least, they had Diana. She was more experienced, if you could say that. Anne was very nervous. These feelings started getting to her about two days before they were supposed to go to school. She feared that her new classmates won't like her because apparently she wasn't pretty enough. Alice and Diana made sure to shower her with compliments to try and get her to realize how beautiful she was. To put shortly, Anne was full of emotions. On the other hand, Alice didn't know what she felt or should feel. A part of her was scared she won't fit in but the other didn't really care. After all, she had Anne and Diana. She didn't really need anyone else, right? She was only in school to learn after all. Again, one part of her feared that she was behind and if she answered something wrong, everyone would think she was stupid. The other part, again, didn't really care. She knew she was actually very intelligent for her age. If she kept up the rhythm she learnt until now, she wouldn't have to worry. She was very good with numbers, knew how to spell a lot of words so she should be fine.
She continued arguing with herself until the very much waited morning.
Now, in the Keller household, a specific blonde was walking around since the first hour of the morning. She dressed with her light red dress, made her hair and her backpack. With a few hours of sleep, she sat at the table waiting for a better hour to wake up her sister. Looking at the clock, she stood up and went back upstairs to wake up Ava. After about half an hour, the two of them were already at the table, waiting for their mother. When she walked in the kitchen, both went silent.
"Good morning, mother. I already sat the table." Alice said smiling, sitting next to her sister.
"Nice of you, Alice. Now, how are you feeling about your first day of school? I'm sure you'll do great. Remember, most likely, the choices you make today will determine how your school years will go. I think it's wonderful to have a second chance. You already saw how one path went at your other school. Now you can try another one. No one knows who you are and how you usually act. You could be anyone. But be sure to choose your friends wisely. I say you should stick with Anne and Diana. They seem good for you." Esther said as she unfolded the newspaper and started reading.
"I'll do my best, mother." Looking again at the clock, her eyes widened at the time. She finished her food and hurried outside. She walked the road she already passed through with Anne and Diana, just to know what to expect. Alice liked it like that. To know what will happen or should happen. Unexpected things weren't really for her. After not too long, Alice found herself in front of a not too big white building.
She walked inside. It was totally different than she expected. It felt as if a war was going on inside. Confused she stayed in place and looked around until she spotted Anne and Diana. Anne's hat was full of beautiful flowers. That's how she saw her in that mess. As Alice walked to them, she heard some girls whispering and laughing as she got closer to her friends. Somewhere in the back, four girls were looking in their direction and whispering. Seeing her, Diana smiled and said:
"There's Alice! We really thought you weren't coming."
Anne turned around and jumped a little. Alice looked up to see her hat was really decorated with more flowers than she thought.
"How could I not come? I couldn't do that to Anne. Also, nice hat. You made quite the impression." She smiled as Diana took their hands and led them back to put their things where everyone kept them.
"Come on, I'll show you everything you need to know. Leave your hats and sweaters here. We could change seats every week. Two of us sit together and the other sits with Ruby. I'm sure she wouldn't mind. Any volunteer for this week?" Diana said as Anne and Alice placed their things.
"I could do it. I don't mind." Alice said as the other two nodded. After that, the three walked back in the class.
"You two go and set your things down." Diana said before two boys approached them.
"Hello there, I'm Moody." The shorter boy said, a small smile on his face.
"Oh, I'm sorry." Anne said as the girls turned around.
"Moody Spurgeon." The same boy said. That seemed to light a bulb in Anne's head. Alice, on the other hand had no idea who he was and what he wanted.
"I'm Anne" She said with a smile.
Alice zoomed out of the conversation and payed her attention to the girls who were laughing at them before. They were simply standing there, probably waiting for the boys to leave so they could talk to them. The one with a blue dress and long blonde hair locked eyes with her. They kept looking each other in the eyes until she turned around.
"Alice. Alice, are you alright?" Diana tapped her shoulder, trying to gain her attention. It worked and Alice looked back to Diana and then back to the two boys. All four were staring at her so she took that as a sign to introduce herself.
"I'm sorry, I spaced out. I'm Alice.
After the boys left, the girls from earlier came closer to the three. Diana smiled and started to introduce them.
"This is Jane Andrews and Josie Pye and Ruby Gillis and Tillie Boulter. Everybody, these are Anne and Alice."
Three of them seemed nice as they said their "hello"s and "nice to meet you"s. However, the one Alice locked eyes with earlier still seemed unpleased.
"It is a scrumptious pleasure to make your acquaintances and I shall do my utmost to prove myself worthy of your friendship." Anne said smiling. On the other hand, Diana's started fading. She loved Anne's personality and imagination but she was afraid her friends won't.
"Um...Anne loves to read, she knows ever so many long words." Diana tried to cover it for Anne. No one seemed to be uncomfortable or to not like Anne for her choice of words. That was until Josie Pye opened her mouth.
"Does she use them all in every sentence?"
She had that stupid smile on her face and then she started chuckling.
"I like to read too." Tillie lied smiling, trying to be polite.
"No you don't" Ruby quick followed.
After a small pause, Tillie continued. "No I don't.."
"I saw you at the church picnic. I'm sorry, I should have said hello." Jane said smiling a little.
"There were an awful lot of people there." Anne said.
"Mother wouldn't let me.." Jane continued.
To make Anne feel any worse, Josie stepped in
"Why do they make you wear that old-lady dress?"
"Oh please, what's your problem? It's none of your business what she wears or how she talks." Alice raised her voice at Josie. Both Diana and Anne seemed surprised. Alice didn't seem the type to actually yell at someone. She seemed too calm for that. After Alice's comment, no one said anything. To break the silence, Diana took Anne and Alice's hands to leave and continue the tour.
Before the bell rang, the three finished the tour and were ready to go in for class.
Their first day was going pretty good. The first class was easy. Just some spelling. The only problem appeared when Moody had to spell "Dreadful". When he made a mistake, Anne stood up and tried to correct him, without being called on. Everything just escalated from there.
At lunch time, all girls stood in the corner, in something like a tent, separated from the rest of the class. Everyone wanted to hear about what we saw about the teacher and Prissy. Everyone thought it was funny and interesting to hear about their relationship. Everything went fine until Anne started telling about her latest family. It started getting weird and everyone was getting uncomfortable. After a short time, all the girls except Diana, Alice and Anne stood up, not wanting to hear it anymore.
After that incident, things got a little awkward between the three girls. They went to take their things and walked a part of their road together.
When Alice got home, she found her sister, Ava on the sofa, in the living room, playing with two dolls. When she heard the door open, her head snapped in her sister's direction and ran towards her. Jumping on her, Ava hugged her with her two hands.
"Ali! You're back! I thought you got lost. How was school? Did you make any friends? How are Anne and Diana? Did you have fun? Tell me everything, I'm bored of playing all day with dolls."
After about an hour, the two sat on the sofa. Alice was done with her story telling and Ava placed her head on her lap. Esther left her office with a pile of papers. Her eyes stopped on the two.
"You're back from school, I see. How was it?"
"Boring, but somehow interesting. How was your day?" Alice straightened up a little.
"Two ladies showed up on our doorstep to ask me to join some club of theirs."
"And what did you say?" She said suddenly a little more interested.
"I agreed, just to see how it went. It was something. We drank tea and talked about how women deserve as much education as men."
"Well that's a reason to drink for. Did you enjoy it?"
"I don't know really. But I saw Merilla there. Anyways, I've got work to do, I have to catch up on the hours I lost during that tea club meeting.
Alice sat there for an hour as Ava slept on her lap. Her mind couldn't help but wander to tomorrow.
