Since the school was closed, Alice got pretty bored inside. There wasn't much to do except studying and sleeping. But for today, she was going to bake cookies  for the people building the Gillis's house with Ruby and Anne. They had much fun and after they finished they headed towards Ruby's house. Many men seemed to be working there. We were pretty happy to help. That until Billy needed attention.

"Hey, there's the freak and her new twin sister. And they brought a friend. How are you, Alice? Missed me?" Billy said, leaning on the railing.

From next to Alice, Ruby tripped and fell. The two girls from next to her gasped as Billy laughed.

"Ruby are you alright?" Anne asked, wanting to make sure.

"Girls are so useless. Guess you should have stayed home in the kitchen, eh?" Billy continued.

"What even is your problem?" Alice yelled at him.

"Go home and bake cookies." Billy stated back. To that, Alice simply raised their basket with a 'You dumb?' look on her face.

"Why don't you shove off and leave the men to their work." Billy yelled at the two. As Anne started screaming at the idiot, Gilbert came down and helped Ruby up. He took her hat that was on the leaves, cleaned it up a bit and gave it to her.

"Thanks for, um, coming by to help feed the beasts." He said as he looked at Alice and smiled.

"Well, I'll need my basket at some point so I'll probably come back in a few hours." she said, looking around.

"I could bring it, no need to make the road again"  Gilbert added, looking in her eyes.

After a few seconds of silence, Anne took Ruby and Alice's hands and left.

Later, as promised, someone knocked on the door. Gilbert stood in front of it with the basket in hands. Alice was upstairs, in her room so Esther opened the door. They looked at each other for a few moments before he spoke.

"Good evening. I brought Alice's basket. The cookies were really good." Gilbert said. He was more than surprised when he saw her mother at the door.

"I'll tell Alice you and the other enjoyed them. Have a good-" Esther tried to say but was stopped when a little girl about five, six years old ran into her.

"Hello. Who are you? Did you bring cookies?" The small girl asked, not able to see that the basket was empty.

"This is Ava, Alice's sister. Anyways, it's getting dark, I'm sure you are waited for home. Have a good evening." Esther said before taking Ava's hand and walking back inside and closing the door.

A bit disappointed, Gilbert walked away, to his house.

After the Gillis's house was finished, the school was reopened. What other better way to come back to school than a spelling contest, right? After a few wrong spelled words, only Anne, Alice, Moody and Gilbert remained.

"Spell 'GORGEOUS'" Mr. Phillips said.

"G-O-R-G-I-" Moody tried to finish

"Wrong.. Sit down. 'OSTRACIZE'?"

"O-S-T-R-A-C-I-Z-E" Gilbert said. He was clearly having fun.

"That would seem to be correct, 'HAUGHTY'"

"H-A-U-G-H-T-Y" Alice spelled, a small smile on her face.

"Correct, 'CALLOUS' "

"C-A-L-L-O-U-S" Anne said, not as happy as usual.

" 'PENITENT' "

"P-E-N-I-T-E-N-T" Gilbert spelled, proud of himself.

That was when Alice noticed that Anne was holding her stomach. Probably a stomach ache. She needed to sit down but if you knew her, you knew that she wouldn't just give up like that. She either won or she didn't.

" 'INTENTIONS' "

"I-N-T-E-N-T-I-O-N-S" Alice spelled, still looking at Anne.

" 'PERSEVERE' "

"P-E-R-S-E-V-E-R-E" Anne said, her stomach clearly still hurting.

" 'ENGAGEMENT' "

"E-N-G-A-G-M-" Gilbert tried, missing an 'E'.

Now, Anne and Alice were the only ones left. Since Anne was hurting, Alice decided to give the next one to her.

" 'FEELINGS' "

" F-E-E-L-...-B" Alice said looking at Anne. It was obvious it wasn't a mistake and Anne was grateful for it.

Everyone started clapping. "Congrats, Anne! You won." Alice said smiling.

After the weekend, Gilbert didn't show up to school. It made Alice worry a bit. Did something happen to him? The day went by. After the tea incident, Anne and Diana were interdicted from sitting together so Alice moved next to Anne. The rest of the day was boring, nothing really happened. Alice remained after class to clean the sponges.

"Alice." Mr. Phillips called, snapping his fingers. She turned around and walked to his desk. "Take these lessons to Gilbert Blythe. He'll be missing class for a while. I don't want him falling too far behind. He's one of by best students." Mr. Phillips handed her the books.

Since winter came, Alice was sinking in the snow, fighting the winds, just to give Gilbert Blythe his lessons. She sighed and kept walking. Once in front of his house, she knocked on the door. In a few seconds, an old man opened the door. Gilbert's dad. That was when she realized why he was missing class.

"Gilbert...is out back chopping wood" The man said leaning on the door, trying to keep his balance. "White hair...You must be Alice, right? I heard nice things about you."

"Dad, what are you doing? You shouldn't be walking." Alice turned around to see Gilbert quickly putting the wood down to help his father.

"My son worries too much. It seems this young lady has urgent business with you. I'll go inside now." The poor man told his son and turned around to go back inside. Gilbert tried to help him but he refused any help.

"Those for me?" He asked, looking at the books Alice was holding. She nodded and handed him the lessons. "It's nice of you to come by, thanks"

"Well, Mr. Phillips can't have his best student fall behind" Alice said, rolling her eyes.

The two looked each other in the eyes for a few moments before Alice cleared her throat.

"I hope you father gets better. I'll see you.." She nodded with a small smile, turned around and left.

She brought Gilbert his lessons a few times after that. Almost every time, his father would open the door since his son was either chopping wood, either other chores. And every time, he tried to get him to sit down. Both of them knew that one of these small meetings might be the last one. She also knew that his father wouldn't get better and that when Gilbert would come back to school, It would most likely because he died.

At some point, that day came and Alice found herself dressed in black, walking in line with Esther and holding Ava's hand. When they got to his grave, everyone was looking down. The priest said a few words before everyone except Gilbert went inside. Alice found herself looking out the window at him. He walked towards the house but suddenly, he stopped and walked away. She quickly took her scarf and jacket and ran outside.

"Gilbert." She called while running after him. He didn't turn around, simply walking slower than before. "I'm sorry you had to go through this...I can't imagine what you're feeling." He stayed silent so she followed him. "I'm here if you want to talk. Even if you don't. But I can leave if you want to be alone." Alice said, trying to offer her comfort. After not getting any answer, she stopped walking and muttered a short 'I hope you get better' and turned around.

"You can stay. I'm sorry, it's just..." He said stopping in place.

"Unfair...It is unfair" She walked back next to him.
