After Ava fell asleep on her lap, Alice had to carry her upstairs, to her bed. After that, she fell asleep as well.

The next day, Alice could still be found setting the table way too early in the morning. After thinking of  what happened the day before, Alice realized that she kinda enjoyed her first day. After she sat the table, she hurried upstairs to change. She put on her light red dress and her black headband. After a while, she went to Ava's room to wake her up.

"Just a little more...Five minutes..." The small girl begged, sinking her head deeper in her pillow, rolling on the other side. Alice chuckled and stood up. Her sister wasn't going to school after all so she could sleep more, right? With that thought, she rubbed her shoulder and left the room.

Esther made her way to the kitchen and sat down with her newspaper in front of her.

"I see you still wake up early. Still excited about school?" Her mother asked, her head still separated from her daughter by the daily newspaper.

"Not really, I don't know. I just couldn't sleep. Ava is still sleeping. She went to bed late last night." Alice answered, eating her toast.

"I will wake her up after you leave."

"Alright. Well I'm finished. You can let your dishes here and I'll take care of them when I'm back." Alice said and stood up, putting her plate in the sink. Taking her sweater and her backup, she walked to the door.

"Have fun, Alice. Don't do anything you know I wouldn't." Esther said and placed her newspaper on the table to look at her daughter. Alice smiled and left.

The platinum blonde walked the road she already knew.  Her feet hit the rocks on the ground, dust coming up. She was thinking of what could happen today. Josie Pye was surely going to be a huge problem. The other girls seemed nice. Ruby was her favorite from the four girls. Alice sat with her the day before and they seemed to get along. She was very sensitive, capable of feeling stronger and more complex emotions than her. It was actually interesting. Deep in thoughts, she entered the woods. Birds were singing and the wind whistled through the leaves. Jane also seemed alright. Too bad she spent time with Josie. Her thoughts were interrupted by a voice calling her from behind.

"You're one of the new girls, right? I'm Billy. Billy Andrews." A tall blonde could be heard from behind. At that point, Alice was thinking if she should turn around and actually talk three words with him or just ignore him and keep going. She decided to turn around. She was early anyways.

"Yes. I'm Alice. Alice Keller." She nodded silently and turned around to walk away.

"Hey, come on. I just wanted to talk a little." He said smirking, grabbing her arm, stopping her from running. Alice tried to free herself from his grip but it didn't work. Seeing her attempts, he held her tighter.

"I hope you don't mind but I really have to get going. I don't want to be late." She said, backing away, hitting a tree with her back.

As Billy stepped closer to her, Alice heard another voice.

"Hey, Billy." A boy shouted from behind Andrews. He turned around to the boy who called his name. "How's it going?" He asked Billy, coming closer.

"Hey, Gilbert" Andrews said, before looking at the girl again.

"Man, it's-it's, um, it's good to be back." the boy named Gilbert got close to Billy.

"Uh..." Billy looked at her again, before looking at Gilbert. "Yeah. Yeah, welcome back." At this point, Alice was looking to the ground. She dropped her board. Normally, she would just take it and leave but it was almost under Billy's foot and she feared he would step on it if she moved.

"Yeah, it's good to see you, buddy." Gilbert said as he shook hands with Billy. His tone said that he was trying to get Billy to go away but also being somewhat polite. "So you guys, uh, playing a game or something, right?" he said, his smile never leaving his face. Their forced interaction would have made Alice chuckle but the situation was still a bit tensioned. Gilbert looked at Alice for a bit before adding "Looks fun, but we should probably get to school, eh"

"Yeah. I was just about to get going." Billy said in a almost hard to hear voice. "See you there." He looked in my direction an winked, smirking.

That face with that smirk on it made Alice put up a disgusted face. They both look in Billy's direction as he walked away.

"You all right, Miss?" The boy asked as he looked at Alice, a combination of confusion and irritation on his face.

"Yes." The girl bent down to take her stuff. After that she hurried past him.

"You're welcome." The boy said as she passed him. "Need anything else? Any dragons around here need slaying?" He shouted after her.

"No! Thank you!" She shouted back from a distance.

"Wait, who are you?" Gilbert asked, raising his voice, trying to get her to hear him. She didn't, Alice was to focused on getting to school on time. "Hey, who are you?" He asked again, this time, running after her.  After they came out of the woods, he kept trying to get her attention: "Um, Miss?" Gilbert asked again. Not getting an answer, he ran again after her, actually catching up with her. "Uh, what's your name, Miss?" A clear look of irritation made it's way on Alice's face as he followed her. What did he even want? She said her thanks and walked away. "What, you can't tell me your name?" For some reason, he kept running after her. Annoyed by his actions, she kept walking, ignoring him. With a small smile on his face, he sprinted, getting to the door before her, opening it for her.

"Here. Allow me." Alice looked weirdly at him before entering the building.

"Thank you." She said walking inside. Sighing, turning to him, she added:

"I'm sorry if I was rude. I'm Alice." She said, smiling a little.

"Uh, I'm-" He tried to say something but was interrupted by some other boys rushing up to him. From behind the class, six girls were looking in the two's direction, Josie frowning. Alice's eyebrows rose as the boy from before was dragged by some hands. The girl shrugged and placed her things down before rushing to her friends.

As she walked outside to put her milk next to the others, Gilbert was bombed with questions.
About where he went, how his dad was feeling, other things like that.

"Why were you walking with that new girl?" A boy asked. That made Gilbert frown.

"Why not?" He said, taking his scarf off.

"My parents said her family's really weird." The same boy said.

"Yeah, my parents say they are witches. Hope she didn't curse you or something." Another one said.

"I don't care who she's friends with or how her family is. A cute girl is a cute girl." Gilbert said as they all laughed.

Alice was at the river, placing her milk down as Diana, Josie, Ruby, Anne and Tillie walked to her.

"I don't know what you think you were doing walking with Gilbert Blythe." Josie said angry, with a crying Ruby next to her. Yeah, sensitive with complex emotions, I told you. Alice stood up confused, looking at the five.

"You can't talk to Gilbert Blythe. You can't even look at him." Tillie spoke.

"Ruby has liked him for three years. She has dibs." she said, hugging the crying mess next to her.

Still confused, Alice nodded. Just to be clear, she wasn't doing it because that Josie Pye said she has to but because she was friends with Ruby and she didn't really wanted anything to do with Gilbert.

Three of them left, Anne and Diana still sat there, looking at her with pity. Alice raised one eyebrow, not understanding why they  were feeling bad for her.

"I'll see if I can smooth things over." Diana said and left.

Anne and Alice stood there for a while before walking back.

Class began and Alice was sitting next to Ruby. It was pretty awkward but she had to let her be. The teacher walked back and fourth through the class. After a little he said:

"Open your reader to page 32."

They all did so and he continued:

"We will read aloud Barry Cornwall's poem, "The fisherman"." The teacher said as he stood in the center of the class. "New girl, the white haired one, stand and begin." Honestly, Alice was surprised but stood up and began:

"A perilous life, and sad as life may be
Hath the lone fisher on the lonely sea,
O'er the wild waters laboring, far from home
For some bleak pittance e'er compelled to roam:"

Alice was pretty good at reading with intonation. She spoke beautifully. Ava would have her reading her stories and sometimes poetry. From somewhere on the other side of the class, the same boy that ran after her to school smiled as he listened to her voice.

"She's good." he whispered to his desk mate.

"Good enough. Sit down. The other new girl. Up and continue."

Anne smiled, her eyes filled with hope. Honestly, Alice was worried. Anne read to her before and she was very passionate about it. Because of it, she would get very involved and in a poem like this one, she was scared she would make a fool out of herself.

Alice held her head down as Anne began reading. As she predicted, everyone started laughing and after a while, the teacher told her to sit down, clearly tired. Everyone was laughing and it didn't take Anne much to realize that they weren't laughing with her but about her.

After class, Anne and Alice stood outside, talking, sitting on a tree stump. They were discussing the poem from class. They both enjoyed seeing each other's opinions on different things. Anne always had a romantic, fantastic approach on almost everything. Alice found Anne's rambling nice to listen.

"I don't know about you but I simply loved reading that poem!" Anne said with a wide smile.

"It was beautiful, yes. Sad, but beautiful. Also dramatic. It was truly something." Alice responded returning her smile. "Don't you find it annoying?"

"Annoying? Oh, Alice, that poem was a gift!" Anne frowned.

"No, no. Them. Look up. They were sitting there, looking at us, since the break started. It's like they need to keep a look on us, unless we'll break something." Alice said looking at the girls who were standing at the window. She looked at Josie when she seemed to look concerned at something. Alice followed her eyes and saw Gilbert walking to them. She gave Anne and elbow signaling her to look in that direction. She gasped and, after looking at the girls that were already looking at them, she quickly took her things and left in a hurry.

"Traitor.." Alice muttered under her breath.

"Hey, um, I , uh, thought you might like to try one." Gilbert spoke, handing her an apple. "They're from out orchard. They're really sweet." Alice looked up before looking at the girls behind him who followed her every move.

"That's , um, that's very nice of you but, I'm not supposed to.. talk to you." She said quickly, looking at him before looking down.

"Why not?" He asked looking confused.

"Sorry.." She whispered while packing her stuff and walking away.

Back in class, Mr. Phillips was writing some equations on the black board. Next to Ruby, our Alice sat bored, looking at the teacher. And to think she actually believed she would fall behind. Looking to her left, Ruby was struggling with her chalk. In front of her, Diana and Anne were writing calmly. She didn't want to look behind, not wanting to see Josie. In the right, on the boys' side of the class, everyone was pretty calm, minding their own business. She looked back to her board and sighed. As she started writing whatever Mr. Phillips was doing, she felt a ball of paper being thrown at her. It got to her feet. Alice took a deep breath, annoyance clear on her face. She didn't even had to look to see who threw it. Seeing she didn't react, Gilbert threw another one. Again, Alice clenched her fist and ignored him. Clearly not understanding what was happening, he stood up and carefully made his way to the girls' side of the class.

"Hey." He whispered, kneeling next to her seat, placing an apple on her desk. At this point, Alice considered if she should turn to him or pray he would leave and not do anything stupid. He did something stupid after all. Seeing as she still ignored him, he grabbed a piece of her hair and pulled it

"Snow." He whispered, pulling her hair.

"Are you out of your mind?!" Alice whispered. She stood up, leaning her hands on the desk before slapping him.

"Silence, class!" Mr. Phillips said, not turning around, clearly not acknowledging  what was going on. Gilbert placed his hand where Alice slapped him and smiled before going back to his place. From next to the girl, Ruby was in shock. Everyone was silent, still surprised by what happened. By the end of the class, everyone returned their attention to their boards.

a/n: Hello. I know the part with "Snow" is cringe but I thought the idea of Alice slapping him was too funny.
