"You see my boy," the old man said "there are beasts who live around here. Some are as old as time itself I've been told. They can have sharp teeth, form into wolves, have more power in their one fingernail than any other person on earth. Years ago man lived freely, in large cities that roared for miles. The buildings touched the skies they said, it was a site to be seen. Mothers and children waited for their fathers to come home and would eat a simple meal together. They lived mostly in peace, unless one man got power hungry and declared war on another"
The boy laid in the cot bed placed by the fire pit and listened closely to the story his grandpa had told him every night. He hugged his wolf, Tera, who had protected him from this exact story the night before. Except tonight would be the last night he heard that story.
The old man stood up from his spot and looked outside nervously, he knew he should have kept moving. The home they set up together was no longer a safe haven from the beasts lurking through the trees. The boy was lulled to sleep, expecting to go fishing the next day to stock up before the seasons changed again.
He looked over at Tera, who was going to give birth any day now. Smiled and asked "Will you protect him? They're coming for me."
The young wolf mother stood up and bared her teeth at the old man, as if she was saying "I will protect him till his dying breath".
He picked up the boy careful not to wake up and placed him in a hollow under the floorboard, a witch that traveled through traded blood for the boy's hidey hole. Human blood became a rarity, it was as good as gold.
The old man had laughed at her asking why doesn't he ask for his protection too, but he knew such magic would be enough not to save him. His knowledge attracted the beasts.
He was around when the beast uprising happened, his job was on the front lines to protect the humans. He managed to save his son and his wife, and lived in peace away from the dangers. They left the week after the boy was born to find a new home and never returned, 11 years ago exactly.
Once the boy was hidden away, with a note from the man and the wolf standing guard beside him the old man looked up.
"I don't have much time." He said out loud to no one but the wind it seemed.
He grabbed a small box, full of family heirlooms hoping the boy would one day forgive him. This was for his protection, his survival.
He sat atop a stump and waited for them, he heard their whispers and lit his tobacco pipe and smiled, "Would you like a puff dear?"
