I was born with three dark lines wrapping around my left wrist like a bracelet. In between each line, were more markings that resembled ancient runes.

"It's the mark of the Gods, Nevari. You are meant for amazing things." My father used to tell me before he passed.

My parents only said it to make me feel better. They always made me keep the markings hidden, as if it was a shameful thing to let it be seen.

"Nevari." I looked up from a book that I had open on my lap to see my brother. "Evana and Malcom have been waiting for you at the docks for the past hour! What the hell have you been doing?" He scolded. Vince is my opposite, light hair, dark eyes, sun tanned skin. Our only similarities are our freckled noses and height

I told them they didn't have to wait.

"Finally reading like you're always nagging at me to do." I rolled my eyes and set the book back on the shelf next to me.

"On a day you're supposed to be training with the other riders?"

I stood up and slid my hands into a pair of thin light washed leather gloves.

"Mhm. I guess I forgot. Also shouldn't you be hosting your meeting at The Hall of Asta, instead of standing here and lecturing me about being late?" That was one thing me and my brother had in common — forgetting.

Vince's deep golden eyes widened.

"SHIT." And with that he rushed out the door, slamming it behind him so violently that dust fell from the wooden ceiling.

"Tell Hickory I said hi!" I shouted after him. I couldn't help but laugh at Vince. He tried to be the best Chief he can, he tries his best to be just as respectable as Uncle Fiske, and our Father.

But he is still just a boy, at least at heart,  Vince is only nineteen. He's a year and a half older than me, I'll let you do the math.

"Took you long enough." Evana huffed from behind a beautiful helmet that she had made herself, with the help of her Titan Wing named Garry.

"I know I am so so sorry I totally forgo-"

"Don't worry about it, Nevs! Besides we got some quality time with our dragons! isn't that right Cedar?" Malcom chimed in, patting his timber jack on the snout.

"Alright." I sighed, reaching for the needle shaped whistle that hung from my neck and lifted it to my lips.

My friends mounted their dragons as I blew into the instrument. For something so small and thin, you'd think it'd screech like a dog whistle but it always let out a low bellow that sounded like a trumpet announcing a battle.

The needle was from my dragons tail. He was a razorwhip I had found a few years ago, just after my brother became Chief. He was caged, abused and abandoned. I helped him get his freedom, and now he shares some of it with me.

Loki came barreling down from the clouds above, and managed to land gracefully on the dock. He greeted me with a low bellow as I pulled myself onto his silver back.

I patted his neck, the palm of my hand met his cold metal exterior in a pattern. Loki began to flap his wings and before I know it we're in the sky, with Evana and Malcom following close behind.

The coast of the island had many activities to help exercise the abilities of riders and their dragons.

We spent many hours at the course, flying through hoops, blasting red targets into splinters and dodging natural obstacles.

We were all wildly competitive, which caused us to grow tired very quickly.

"Hey, I think I'm going to head out. I'll see you guys tomorrow!" Malcom shouted a few above me. I looked up and saw him peering over Cedar's side with a goofy smile.

"See you later, Malcom!" I laughed a little, giving him a small salute. The strawberry blonde boy dangled for a moment longer, and flew off after winking.

"Try not to fall in sheep shit again!" He shouted just before he was out of hearing range. I rolled my eyes.

That was one time.

Evana swooped down and hovered next to me. "I think I might do the same. You comin'?" She offered.

After a long afternoon of practice, we'd usually buy sváss berry muffins at the towns market place and fly up to the nearest cliff to eat our snacks, while Loki and Garry chewed on some fish. But I'm just not feeling up to it this evening.

"No... I think I'll stay out for a bit longer." I said a little too somberly while looking out across the sea.

"You alright?"

"Yes, I'm fine." I lied, rubbing Loki's smooth neck.

"Are you sure?" Evana pressed. I nodded, and then we said our goodbyes.

Evana left me to hover in the cold breeze, alone. Something was wrong, I could feel it.

"Come on, boy." Loki was given his name for a reason. I gasped as he dived, pummeling straight down towards the sea.

My dark chocolate colored hair whipped in my face, as I leaned back gripping onto Loki for dear life.

He began to corkscrew as we neared the surface of the water, all of a sudden he turned his neck, nipping at the fabric of my boot. "OH DON'T YOU DARE LOKI I SWEAR TO ODIN IF YOU-"

Loki let out a low rumble, as if to laugh at me. The dragon was stubborn, I suppose he learned that from me.

Loki tore me from his back and caught me just before I plunged into the depths of the ocean. Now he held me with his talons, my feet dangling, it almost felt like I was walking on water.

I was tempted to curse him out, but decided to give in to the fun. Loki began to ascend again, we've done this many times before and it was always so refreshing.

He roared, and dropped me. I smiled as I gracefully fell, feeling the wind on my face.

"LOKI-" my fun turned to fear, as I crashed into the ocean. Where did he go?!

The iciness burned, everything did, my eyes, my skin, my lungs... I tried so hard to reach the surface.

But I couldn't make it.
