I woke up to the feeling of needles in my throat as I coughed. My vision was dark and starry for a moment until my eyes readjusted. I was surprised when I saw Hickory. He was hunched over in a wooden chair with his face buried in his massive hands.
The ginger giant looked to be sound asleep, so I took the chance to slip away to find Loki. The moment I placed my feet onto the floor, Hickory peaked through the gaps of his fingers.
"Stay in bed, Nevs. You need your rest." He grumbled as he removed his hands from his face and leaned back in the chair.
"Where's Loki? Is he ok? Is he hurt?" I stammered. Despite my anxiousness and worry over my dragon, I pulled my legs back under the soft sheets of the bed.
"The haven't found him yet." Hickory yawned, "don't worry though, kid. I'm sure Loki's alright."
My gut wrenched at the thought of Loki being hurt. He's already been through too much pain for any creature to endure.
"How long have I been out for?"
"A day or two." Hickory sighed casually, shifting in his seat.
I was about to shout my concerns before Vince came barging in through the door. Me and Hickory looked up at him. Vince smiled when he saw me awake, and tackled me in a hug.
"Never do that again do you understand?" He sounded worried, like there was something more than just my state that was upsetting him.
"I'm sorry!" I responded, hugging him back. Hickory stood up when Vince released me from his embrace and hugged each other.
"What's the news, brother?" Hickory asked, looking ridiculously taller than my slim 5'6 brother.
"There's a fleet of ships not too far from here... there's hundreds of them." Vince said in a dark tone.
"Do you know what they want?" I piped up, the two men turned to me.
"Nothing good."
"Do you think they have her dragon?" Hickory gestured to me, jabbing his hikers thumb in my direction.
"I'm almost certain. We have to ready the riders tomorrow morning, we can't let them reach Barosvik." I could feel his fear in his voice. Vince has always been a pacifist, he was never one for violence.
"Maybe they're just passing trough?" I suggested.
"Those ships are Colborn. Mother and Father sheltered you from those stories, but I've read about them many times before and the Colborns... they're monsters and they'll kill you, Nevari. They'll kill all of us, and they won't show any mercy. They are brutal." Vince rambled, clearly becoming overwhelmed with the idea of war. Hickory put a hand on my brothers shoulder to calm him.
"I will fight with you, Vincent." He said.
"So will I!" Vince turned sharply to me.
"You will not. You will hide, and you will stay safe away from the violence. Do you understand me, Nevari?" He stated firmly. When I didn't respond, he shook Hickory's hand.
Then, as if on cue, a knock came at the door and Evana came bursting into the house with Malcom by her side.
"We found him." They huffed, trying to catch their breath, "we found Loki."

The next morning I was feeling refreshed, and relieved. I walked to the docks beneath the snowy sky, and whistled for Loki. He came from behind me, nuzzling his head beneath my arm. I gave him a few rubs on the head.
"I'm glad you're ok, boy!" I laughed as he snuggled against me like a cat. Loki bellowed, and drowned my clothes in slobber. "Wow, thanks." I tried to wipe it away but it wouldn't come out.
"Nevari!" I turned around to see Malcolm running towards me, holding onto a satchel that hung from his shoulder. He was out of breath before he reached me.
" Hey Mal!" I laughed, as Loki gave a satisfied hiss and nipped at Malcoms bag. "Loki, stop that! Don't be rude."
"Hey, I knew you were coming to check up on Loki so I brought him some snacks! I got some for us too!" He said opening the satchel and throwing it to the ground. Loki attacked it and scarfed down the fish inside.
"Oh, thank you!" I smiled as he handed me a muffin.
"Of course!" Malcolm smiled before shoving his own muffin into his mouth. They were soft, fresh and tasted like oats and honey. His mother ran the local bakery and was an extremely talented culinist. I quickly ate the rest of it.
"Where's Cedar?" I asked, those two are usually inseparable. Loki rumbled with a mouthful of fish from behind us in curiosity.
"E eing amad uh" Malcolm tried to say, as he swallowed down the rest of his muffin. "She's being armored up." He repeated, with a frown.
"You guys are going?"
"Tomorrow at dusk." I looked behind me, as Loki finished his snack. He came and rested his head on top of mine. "Let me guess, Vince isn't letting you go?"
"No, he's not." I huffed. Malcolm crossed his arms in thought.
"We need you out there, Nevari. I understand that Vince is trying to keep you safe, and I respect that. I don't want you hurt either but you are the best viking in this town." Malcolm explained.
"Vince will not be convinced, but I'll figure something out." I said, holding my hand out to Mal. He took it and pulled me into a tight hug, he smelled like his mother's bakery, like cinnamon, sugar and honey.
"You always do."
I woke up before the town the next day and prepared myself. I got dressed, and slid on a long, black and fingerless glove made of leather over the runes on my wrist. I looked in the mirror, hung on the wall. My yellow eyes were dark with exhaustion, as I stared at my appearance.
I looked almost identical to my mother, with my dark brown waves cascading down my back, her straight yet small nose and thin lips. Below the mirror, my fathers old cloak laid folded on top of my dresser, as well as his sword. I took both and snuck out the back, careful not to wake Vince.
I left Loki in the hangers last night to avoid the risk of waking my brother with the whistle. The stars were still out and the breeze was silent in the snow. I krept past Evana's home, tiptoeing into an alley for a shortcut. I heard tapping on a window when I slipped into the road.
"Nevari, what are you doing?" Someone whisper-shouted, I looked up to see Evana leaning out her bedroom window. It had been a while since I had seen her face. She moved a strand of her short hair out of her gray eyes.
"Very good question! Just don't tell Vince you saw me ok?" I whispered back. She rolled her eyes, "Please?"
"Fine. Just don't get yourself in trouble!"
Once I reached the hanger, the doors were already open. The other dragons growled and grumbled in curiosity as I walked by.
"I got your note." Malcolm walked out, holding a piece of parchment between his fingers. I had stopped by his house later that night and had his mother leave it on his pillow.
"Thanks for opening everything up for me. I'm going to get out of here early, I'm going to scout. I'll meet you right outside Berk at midday and give you any heads up you might need." Malcolm nodded, he was just as anxious as I was.
"I've got Loki all saddled, you guys should be good to go." He said, opening Loki's stable door. He rumbled and walked over to me. "Be careful Nevari." Malcolm added, as I mounted the razorwhip.
"Thanks, I will." He gave me a half smile and a wave before me and Loki took off.
