The man continued talking, "Rocco Smyles had a younger brother named Jake. Jake was Rocco's indulgence, he gave him everything. Jake used his brother's money and influence to live the high life - in it's lowest form, if you get my meaning - he was a complete degenerate."
"Jake made the mistake of corrupting the daughter of a man whose name you don't need to know. That man hired me."
"It was a straightforward job and the pay reasonable. Of course, Rocco was distraught and vengeful. He didn't dare go after the father so he decided to seek his revenge against the actual killer."
"I found his persistent attempts to discover my identity irritating after a while, so I arranged for him to receive a tipoff. Then I sat back and waited."
Nicky gasped, "And I was sent along like a lamb to the slaughter, a naive pretender, a sucker?"
Bentley was gazing at him with sympathy, "I'm afraid so, Nicky."
"Listen to me, Nicky, there is no professional integrity in this business; you cannot just blindly trust anyone. If your employer believes that they can betray you with impunity, then there is every likelihood they will."
"It is simply a contract, Nicky. An agreed payment for a killing. If the hired killer betrays the hirer, then he should expect that hirer to come after him with murderous intent. And it works the same the other way. For instance, anyone who hires me should be well aware that if they betray me in any way, then I will kill them."
Reality began to smack Nicky in the face. His dream of becoming an elite assassin was mere smoke; he was an innocent child trying to play with the big rough kids; he was only going to get hurt.
Nicky was trying hard not to cry, "Will you kill me?"
"I'm not a cruel man, Nicky, but I am ruthless. I am trying option three at the moment."
"Oh . . . er, option three, you mean, use me somehow, but . . . but, will you kill Rocco?"
Bentley nodded, "I gave him a chance to back off, he didn't."
"If I tried to run away, would you kill me?"
Just the nod this time.
"If I got away, would you find me and kill me?"
A third nod.
"Mr Bentley, I don't know what you want of me, but I'll do whatever it is you want. I will, sir, I will."
"Nicky, I fancy having a housekeeper or, better still, a maid. A very tame one who is obedient, subservient and terrified at the very idea of betraying me."
The young intruder was nodding eagerly, "I'll do that. I can, I can."
Bentley was giving him a slightly sinister smile, "Now I can't trust you at this stage, Nicky, but let's give it a try."
The man went out; he was away for some hours. He had taped Nicky up throughly again before he left.
