Daylight.
A man was standing in the doorway. He was marginally above average height, medium build, short brown hair that made his ears slightly prominent, a narrow face and a smallish nose that seemed a little out of proportion with the rest of his features. Mid to late thirties, and at the first impression, not a particularly striking individual, not someone who stood out.
He came over and easily lifted Nicky up into a sitting position with one hand. He removed the tape from around the younger man's mouth and gave him some water to drink from a plastic bottle.
"Name?"
"Slade."
Derisive snort, "Last chance, name?"
"Nicky Wiven."
Nicky was scared; he couldn't understand what had gone wrong . . . and what was going to happen? What would this man do?
The man had stood back and was studying him.
"What happened?" Nicky burst out with. "How did you know I was here? I don't understand."
He was confused, nothing made sense.
The man continued to study him with dull eyes.
Nicky had avoided the obvious cctv cameras and bypassed the associated security system, but had remained completely unaware of the far more sophisticated (and better concealed) main system. The man had infrared video footage of Nicky's entire progress through the house.
"Is this your first?"
Nicky experienced a brief moment of indignation. "No, my third," he blurted out impulsively.
"Hmmm."
What did that mean? How did he . . .?
Who was this man? He seemed to know that Nicky had come to kill him. Oh shit, what was going on? What? What?
"Mister, please, I'm sorry, I'm really sorry. Please don't hurt me. Please don't turn me over to the police. Please, mister. I'll do whatever you want. I'll make it up to you."
