Gravity
Chapter Eleven
___________________________________

Everything was quiet the next morning Eli had woken up. She was expecting to hear conversations in the kitchen or the smell of food but silence was the only thing that had welcomed her.

She laid on her back as she stared up at the ceiling blankly. For once, she grew sad from having an empty house. She has spent months and months constantly looking forward to being alone, but here she was, not wanting to be alone anymore. She knew that she couldn't be dependent on anyone, especially not now. She didn't want to form too tight of bonds with anyone only for them to throw her away like they always did.

She kept having to remind herself that they are her brothers friends, not hers, no matter what they told her.

They were only being nice. Right?

Eli spent her whole day in bed, mostly reading. Her father had returned home around five in the afternoon with take out. Alex had tried to convince his daughter to eat with him and maybe even watch a movie, but she never once left her bedroom.

The next day was the same.

Eventually Eli had dragged herself from the comfort of her bedroom to make herself some tea– the first thing she would drink in two days besides taking occasional sips of water from the faucet in the bathroom. Her father was sitting in the living room watching a tv show, being the only other person home.

Eli stood in the doorway as she waited for the water in the kettle to come to a boil.

"Where's Paul?" She asked in a quiet voice. She hadn't seen nor heard from him in the past two days– which felt odd to her for once.

"He's been busy with work." Alex answered honestly, glancing up at his daughter from the recliner.

"Oh," She gave a nod. "I never asked what he does for work..." She trailed off.

"He helps the council with things." Alex answered simply, not going into any detail about his sons apparent job. They called it work around people that didn't know the truth but it was more than work. It was his fate, his duty, a responsibility he couldn't get out of until he controlled his anger problems.

However Alex hoped that Paul would one day– when he stopped phasing– would take on his lumber company and become an employee and eventually the owner. He had faith that his son could eventually control his temper enough to stop phasing and continue forward with life as a normal human.

"Like what?" Eli pushed.

"Just things, Elizabeth." Alex sighed heavily, not in the best mood today to have to make up some excuse for his son. He already had to do that for Paul when their mother asked a ridiculous amount of questions about her ever-changing son that Alex couldn't answer. "Why are you so interested in your brothers work all of the sudden?"

Eli pressed her lips together and her facial expression hardened. She was only asking a genuine question and her fathers harsh tone hurt her feelings a little bit. She knew she was probably being overly emotional, but every time she tried to make an effort someone was always rude to her in return.
