Shaun was in awe as Jess stepped backstage, his heart racing as he gazed upon her, studying her features like it was the first time. There was a softness in her appearance. There was something about Jess that both excited and calmed him. He raised his hand and waved at her; she smiled.
Jess wore a deep emerald green dress that clung to her figure, accentuating her curves while maintaining an elegant flow. The dress had a sweetheart neckline and a subtle shimmer. The bodice was adorned with delicate lace patterns, while the skirt flowed gracefully down to her ankles, allowing glimpses of her silver strappy heels as she walked. Her hair was styled in soft, waves that framed her face perfectly, a few loose strands adding a touch of effortless charm. Her makeup was done with a light, natural touch, enhancing her features without overpowering them. Her lips were painted in a soft, rosy hue.
Shaun, on the other hand, was dressed in a tailored charcoal grey suit that fit him impeccably. The suit jacket had a modern, slim cut, with a crisp white shirt underneath. He wore a deep burgundy tie that added a pop of color to his ensemble, coordinating subtly with his pocket square. His hair was neatly styled, while his black leather shoes gleamed with a fresh shine."I am so glad you are here," he stated, holding her hands tightly.
"I was in a rush heading here, and I just had my hair and makeup done in a flash. Do I look okay?" she asked innocently.
Shaun contemplated how he could respond to that question. Would it be okay to tell her she took his breath away? Nope! His mental voice answered. Shaun gave her a reassuring smile and suddenly brushed the sides of her face. "You look beautiful," he finally said.
"You don't look shabby yourself Shaun." She smiled.
As the event went on, Shaun and Jess waited backstage for their turn. Jess mind recollected their past, when Jess first saw Shaun, her heart skipped a beat. She didn't understand the feeling at the time, he was everything she had ever dreamed of and more. Even with his flaws, she believed she could handle them and help him improve. She was in love—with the idea of being with him, or maybe it was just an illusion of love.
But Shaun never showed his true feelings for her; he didn't return the sacrifices she made for him. It might have been her obsession over the years, but lately, his look seemed different. There was a softness, curiosity, and interest in his eyes. Was she misunderstanding it all? Was it just her interpretation? She wondered.
"Shaun..." she called. He met her eyes and stood up. She gathered her courage. She couldn't ignore the changes she was feeling anymore. She needed to understand what Shaun's actions meant and come to terms with Rick's role in her life now.
She was about to speak when a loud announcement called both their names. Jess took a deep breath. She decided to handle this later, but she promised herself she would resolve it before the day was over.
Shaun guided Jess outside, as the music started, the audience erupted in applause. The song they performed was about lost love—. Jess watched Shaun closely, her feelings deepening with each lyric. Shaun's voice was filled with emotion as he sang, "In my heart, it isn't over. Come back to me, for I regret nothing but you." Seeing the sadness in his eyes made Jess feel a chill.
When the song ended, the audience clapped loudly, and Jess blew them a warm kiss. He hugged her, and they thanked the committee. As they stepped off the stage, Shaun pulled her close, making Jess gasp.
"Shaun..." she said softly.
"We need to talk, Jess," he replied, Jess nodded, ready to clear things up. Shaun's hands rested on her shoulders, seeking strength.
Before he could speak, a soft voice called from behind. "Shauny..."
Jess turned to see a woman with emerald eyes and blonde hair. He looked surprised.
"Cindy, I didn't expect you here," he said, turning to face her.
"It's the last day of boot camp. I wanted to make sure we bring you back safely," Cindy said with a smile, then looked at Jess. "Who's this?"
He sighed. "Cindy, let's talk first. I'll explain everything," he said. Jess sensed Shaun was apologizing for something. His back blocked her view of Cindy.
"I'll go for now. We'll talk later," Jess said, turning to leave.
She hoped Shaun would call her back and choose her over Cindy, but neither of them came after her. Jess laughed bitterly. Did she really think Shaun would give up his career for her after just 15 days? Was she still holding on to hope despite the pain he had caused her?
"Stupid! Stupid! Stupid!" Jess cried out.
Tears streamed down her face as she let her emotions flow. She shivered, not sure if it was the cool sea air or her own feelings. Warm arms wrapped around her, offering comfort. The embrace tightened slightly, and Jess relaxed into it, her muscles loosening. "Let it out, let it out... I am here for you," the voice said.
The warmth felt right. Jess let herself go, her worries fading as she was held close. She felt the person's breath on her skin and the gentle touch on her hair.
"Rick," she said, turning to face him.
Rick wiped away her tears, then pulled her close again, soothing her hair. Jess shut her eyes, feeling safe in his arms. She heard his heartbeat and wondered what it was telling her.
Rick watched the dark sea. He felt Jess move closer, staying quiet, and let the moment stretch out. He wanted to protect her and show he cared, but he knew that wasn't what she needed right now. So, he let the silence fill the space, letting her sorrows drift away for the night.
