Jess woke up to the sound of waves crashing. She stretched, trying to shake off the sleepiness. She went to the balcony where her mother, Kris, was sitting and looking out at the sea.
"Good morning," Jess said softly.
Kris turned slowly and gave a weak smile. Jess felt a pang of worry. "Mom, how are you feeling?" she asked, sitting next to her and touching her arm gently.
"I'm tired," Kris said. "My body feels heavy."
"Do you want to go to the hospital?" Jess asked, her voice filled with concern.
Kris shook her head. "We can go later... I just want to enjoy this moment with you and the ocean."
Jess looked at her mother, her heart sinking. Kris looked pale and weak. Jess had been urging her to get medical help for days, but Kris had always refused.
"Mom," Jess said, her voice breaking.
Kris looked at her with a calm expression. "Being here with you is my peace. Thank you for this chance, Jessie," she said, as if saying a final goodbye.
"Mom, please don't say that," Jess pleaded. "We still have time. We need to make up for lost moments. You can't just leave me."
Kris gently touched Jess's face. "I feel like my time is coming. I'm at peace."
"No, Mom," Jess's voice was desperate.
"I love you, Jessie. You know that, right?" Kris said, her movements slowing as her eyes closed.
Jess's heart raced. "Mom! Mom! Mom!" she shouted, shaking her mother. "Mom!"
A loud noise at the door made Jess turn. Rick was standing there, looking worried. "Rick?" she gasped.
"Let me help," Rick said urgently. "We need to get your mom to the hospital, quickly!"
Jess, panicked, moved quickly. Rick carefully lifted Kris and placed her in his car. Jess followed, securing her mother in the backseat. Rick drove fast, calling ahead for an emergency.
At the hospital, Jess was in a daze, focusing only on her mother's condition. Rick called ahead, and when they arrived, hospital staff quickly took Kris inside.
Jess watched as doctors and nurses worked urgently. The sight of her mother on a stretcher, surrounded by medical staff, felt surreal. Jess stood frozen, watching as the doctors tried to save Kris.
"Mom..." Jess whispered, her voice breaking through her shock. She blamed herself for not considering how the journey would affect her mother.
The doctors called for epinephrine and worked hard to revive Kris, but the monitor showed a flat line. Jess's heart raced as they performed CPR and gave adrenaline shots, but nothing changed. The beeping stopped, replaced by a painful silence.
Tears streamed down Jess's face. She felt Rick's arms around her, offering comfort. His presence was a small solace amidst her grief. She watched as the medical team used the defibrillator, but each attempt to revive her mother failed.
When the doctors stopped, Jess knew it was over. The doctor told her the time of death and offered condolences.
"We'll give you time to say goodbye," the doctor said.
Jess collapsed into Rick's arms, crying uncontrollably. Her sobs were raw and endless, a reflection of the deep loss she felt.
Death, they say, is a tragedy for the young and a rite of passage for the old. But Jess knew that regardless of age, dealing with death was a profound and painful experience.
"Jess," Rick said softly, his voice a comforting anchor in the storm of her emotions.
"Let's pay our last respects to your mother," Rick whispered gently.
Jess shook her head, tears streaming down her face. "Rick, I can't. I just can't," she choked out, her body trembling uncontrollably.
"Jess, look at me," Rick urged softly. She lifted her red, puffy eyes to meet his gaze. "I'm here with you. You're not alone," he reassured her.
With a deep breath, Jess turned her gaze back to her mother's lifeless form. Slowly, she approached her side and reached out to touch her hand. With a trembling kiss, she whispered, "Rest well, Mom. I'll be okay. I love you too."
As her tears continued to fall, Rick placed a comforting hand on her shoulder, offering silent strength. Jess clung to her mother one last time, her cries of pain echoing through the hospital hallways.
The funeral for Kris was both heart-wrenching and tender. Jess found solace in the cherished memories, the sweet moments of her mother's life that now felt like a blooming spring meadow amidst her grief.
Throughout this difficult time, Rick remained a steadfast support. His presence was a quiet reassurance; he never pried or questioned but focused solely on her well-being and the funeral arrangements. He respected her need to mourn and gave her the space she needed.
The pastor's words were soothing: "Mourning is not the end but a celebration of a life well-lived. Reflect on the moments when your souls smiled together when you reached out and touched each other invisibly yet tangibly. Death is merely the end of a chapter. As this body returns to the earth, the spirit will remain in your heart, transforming into a new way of connection. Though it brings sadness, it is part of life."
Jess sniffled, gazing up at the clear blue sky. She whispered, "Mom, you're with Adam now. I hope you find happiness in the next life."
As the final shovelfuls of dirt covered the coffin, Jess lingered by the grave. Rick, understanding her need for solitude, said he would wait in the car.
Staring blankly at the freshly turned earth, Jess contemplated the inevitable truth of death. Despite their complicated relationship, she had genuinely tried to reconcile with her mother. There were so many moments she wished she could have shared—more mornings to laugh together, playful splashes of saltwater, and meals she could have cooked for Kris.
She cried again, the weight of her loss heavy on her heart.
